Re: Huge price drop on Standard Horizon HX851

Thanks for pointing this out. I just placed an order for this. I don't actually need another handheld, I have a perfectly fine older SH, of course without DSC, GPS etc.. But it is over 10 years old...

Re: Cruising Through Tax Season

I am not a cruiser but I also have been using Taxact for many years. It is all online, no CDs to buy etc. And since it all happens in a browser, it is operating system independent (I don't use...

Re: latest and greatest binoculars?

That's the one I bought 14 years ago, and still extremely happy with it. Amazingly, the price is nearly the same it was in 2001!

Re: Loud hailer/foghorn/PA?

I went through the same decision process. My new VHF (with AIS+DSC) has loudhailer capabilities and I decided that I would splurge for the horn. I installed it on deck, right next to the foot of the...

Re: Boat wire: is SAE tinned "good enough"?

If you don't throw an obvious fraudster under the bus, they will make continue to make money with people that are less cautious than you are.

Re: Boat wire: is SAE tinned "good enough"?

A highly useful post! I did not know that SAE gauges are different from AWG gauges. Thank you for pointing this out!

And I agree with your outrage. This could have easily happened to me (see...

Re: Head dumps directly into sea?

I wouldn't shoot squirrels to eat them, or to use their furs, but I can understand why someone does it. Killing 'for fun' I don't understand.

Re: Head dumps directly into sea?

Pretty much all wild animals can carry rabies. Are you gonna kill everything moving around you?

Just stop shaving them, and you won't catch rabies :D

We are here pretty much surrounded by...

Re: Head dumps directly into sea?

I don't even know where to start, and I don't have all day.

First, I don't quite see where shaved squirrels come in. You think buying a squirrel-safe bird feeder is too much work but you go out...

Re: Head dumps directly into sea?

There are other ways to discourage squirrels to eat bird food or to move into the attic than killing them. There are bird feeders specifically designed to be inaccessible for squirrels, and if you...

Re: Head dumps directly into sea?

What a warm and loving person!

Do you also poison all the songbirds that happen to come in your yard?

Re: Chucking my propane stove, what to replace it with

Ouch!

Yes, even diesel will do that if dripped onto a hot exhaust.

Well, it also needs an illegal (not-ignition proofed) relay.

Re: How to retrieve anchor when rode is covered in barnacles?

Leaving the rode there may be nice to the critters but not to the sailors that want to use the anchorage after you. They will, unbeknownst to them, have a 100' long line of high probability of...

Re: Chucking my propane stove, what to replace it with

Same here. My standard stove fuel is about 3/4 kero mixed with 1/4 mineral sprits. I feel that it burns just as well as pure kero but it largely obviates the need for cleaning.

All fuels smell....

Re: Which AIS should I buy?

I don't; as I said, I bought the Vespermarine XB8000 which seems to be working great.

One argument over the AIT2000 is that the XB8000 has built-in wifi. I did not consider this a big deal until I...
