Re: *** Marine Battery Use Survey ***

Maine, you've helped so many of us out so many times with your sage advice, I'm sure I'm speaking for others. It's our pleasure to fill out your survey.

Re: Starting to look for a boat

I'm going to pile on here, hope you don't mind. I've had 5 different boats, now in my 60's. Each one fit the bill for the time and place I was at.

Lifetime sailing, particularly in your...

Re: RF Main pros and cons

IMHO it's not worth the performance hit in a boat in the 30's. Get towards 50 feet we feel differently.

Advantages:
- easy to deploy and put away
- easy to reduce sail

Disadvantages
-...

Re: Greatest fear?

There I am in the water, watching my boat sail away on autopilot. I shout but the crew is asleep below. It get's smaller, and smaller, and smaller....

Re: New Gen water ballasted anchor

You young people are all alike. Never learn from the past. Just ready to sail off without proper training, dreaming of crossing oceans in $100 boats that you restore for $10 additional in parts,...

Re: Topside Paint Color - Flag Blue or White?

I've been living with dark Awlgrip colors on the last 2 boats. Had one boat painted new, another repainted once. Dark colors are unforgiving. If prep is bad, can look like a fun house mirror or...

Re: Loud hailer/foghorn/PA?

We mounted ours directly below the mast mounted radar. Works well without detracting appearance on a nice day. And it makes it easy to be complaint with timing in restricted vis.

Re: Whats your best bit of kit??

Code zero sail. I know many think I'm nuts but in light wind, we're still sailing, and it's a piece o cake to deploy. We used to call them reacher/drifters, but these new rollers make them so...

Re: Trolling

In the Caribbean, we've had good success with Tuna and even Wahoo trolling with a hand line with heavy mono (100 lb) and wire leaders to plastic squid. This works well as these pelagic fish can...

Re: Bilge pump switch retrofit

Being totally paranoid (cause they really are out to get you), here's what we do.

- the 3 way dedicated switch wired to bypass the main DC switch (always on), with a breaker or fuse (another...

Re: Best tow service/package?

I know the local guys pretty well here, and also am a subscriber to their service. It's a good deal, although I'm not sure they'll help you if you get locked in the sauna Med :D The local guys...

Re: Can We Bareboat Charter in BVI's?

George,

Yea, it ain't aerospace, in fact is just the opposite:D

Mini packs lighter than me, I've always checked something, including expensive dive gear, and it's always made it. But as they...

Re: Can We Bareboat Charter in BVI's?

Good point if you're carrying on, no Leatherman for sure. I'm always checking something due to too much dive/snorkel gear. But, carry on includes bathing suit, t-shirt, and tooth brush which worse...

Re: Can We Bareboat Charter in BVI's?

I'm trying to think of the things that surprise a boat owner about a first charter.

Charter companies typically give you very few tools. As a boat owner, your first instinct when something easy...

Re: Dead overnight

If it's just for starting Capta, why wouldn't a car battery do it....all you need is a second or so of a pile of amps, don't need hours of power... assuming your engines start well. Even down there...

Re: Dead overnight

One thought is that if it's just a start battery, why not take a cheap, non-deep cycle, car battery and use that until you get the right stuff. I'm thinking that CCA (minus the cold where you are...

Re: Hard time finding crew opportunities

I'd never hire anyone to help me sail or deliver a boat that I found strictly on any internet site. Maybe it's just me, but I don't think so.

Everyone who've I've ever hired, or even had assist...

Re: Renaming Boat

5 sailboats owned in sequence since the late 80's. 4 renamed, one new. No bad luck (on boats at least). A couple of the previous names where so bad that if we were required to keep the name we...

Re: Best aft master berth on under 50' boat?

These threads we all kinda say the same things we each always say, which are based on how we individually use our boats. Ocean crossers don't like big aft berths, coastal cruisers like big aft...

Re: Minimum Draft

Good question, doesn't sound like Maine does it:D

Around here the mud goes on forever in some bays. People wading in have been know to get sucked in and never been heard from again.

I...

Re: Where do you mount your chart plotter?

When you got a binnacle, I think the answer is easy, but the OP has a tiller steered boat.

If you have a dodger, bljones has a solution we've used successfully in his post. Depending on the...

Yea, I agree with you mini....in fact I'd only do this crazy negative draft stuff in places I really know stone cold. A friend with a 40' center boarder hit a abandoned mooring mushroom and cracked...

Re: Minimum Draft

In my neighborhood, shallow draft is a must. We've owned several shallow draft sailboats, and as others have said, the builder's spec is typically optimistic.

On the other hand, not all...

Re: Marina unplugged my dock cord and damaged my boat

IMHO, deals are between people. You can paper them over as much as you like with lawyers and contracts, but you no lawyer can produce enough paper to protect you completely from deal with someone...
