My recommendation: contact the local Yacht club. You'll find a wealth of knowledgeable people that can help you. Surveys are a great step but there are to many other variables.

I am also fond of Royce's Sailing Illustrated. There is an Anniversary Edition out now, as well as a newer version. They are diverse in the material covered and they are conveniently sized.
