Re: Advice From Young Punks

Youngish sailing punkette here.

Using your cell phone as a hot-spot will burn through your battery and your data plan quite quickly and should be considered a short run solution anywhere you can't...

Re: Boat as a weekend home on the Chesapeake?

I thought I'd update this older thread for anyone else searching the archives.*

I've had my sailboat for over a year now, and my original question seems almost ridiculously funny to me now. Today...

Re: your thoughts for a new sailor

Everyone is different, but my advice would also be to start smaller: smaller boats, smaller waters. Sailboats have a substantial learning curve. Even moving from a 19 foot keelboat to a 28 foot...

Re: My Retirement Plan - Finding the Right Boat

As another sailor with a big dog let me give you a tip. Don't buy a boat where your dog can't easily jump into the cabin. I've got a fairly steep ladder leading into the companionway on my Pearson...

Re: Hopes and dreams. Is this realistic?

Just a warning if you haven't purchased a sailboat before:

Make sure you've budgeted enough money not just for the boat, but for all the expenses with buying a boat. If you want to be sure you...

Re: Anyone ever buy bigger or new and regret it?

I'm not sure why anyone feels a need to make generalizations about women to understand why some wives don't like sailing. I don't know how much time you all have been spending outside your marina,...

Re: Anyone ever buy bigger or new and regret it?

I have the perfect boat for the OP: the Alerion Express 33:

From the Sailing magazine review:
"From a practical perspective, the Express 33 blends the daysailing mindset of the popular Alerion 28...

Re: The New Generation

Thanks for these links - I'm going to check these guys (and girls) out.

But count me as one of the few who is kind of glad that young people aren't that into sailing. I like the relaxed,...

Re: Docking for Dummies

Same here. I need to kick the throttle some when changing direction (stopping the boat from moving forward and then getting some momentum in reverse) and getting the bow through a stiff wind when...

Re: Docking for Dummies

It's true I spend much more time just hanging out on my boat than I ever thought I would when I was looking for a boat. It's my county-house-escape-from-the-city even when I don't plan to sail. I'm...

Re: Docking for Dummies

Nope, I didn't sail her. I have heard they aren't suited to the light winds we often have on the Chesapeake, but it really did make my Pearson feel like a camper. And I love my boat.

Re: Docking for Dummies

Agreed. When backing in or doing a back-and-fill on my own boat, I pin the wheel with my knees and use two hands to shift and adjust the throttle. But every now again, I forget to reduce the...

Re: Docking for Dummies

Thanks for the head's up about the steering locks. My wheel turns about 1 and 1/2 times from lock to lock (3/4 of a complete wheel turn from center to lock on either side) so something to keep in...

Re: Docking for Dummies

It's been a little over a year since I posted about my docking woes, and I thought I would update this thread, for any others in similar circumstances.

I did get a little better at docking during...

Re: Moving up in size. Suggestions?

Has your wife been on an Island Packet yet? I spent a few days on an IP 32 last week was pretty impressed with how comfortable it was. Lots of creature comforts. Tons of headroom and very beamy. ...

Re: Sailing Schools - certificated coures or 'a la carte'???

I started out as a total newbie in my mid-30s. I had been on a sailboat exactly once, fell in love, and wanted to learn how to sail.

I signed up for a 2-day intro to sailing course at a local...

Re: So you want to race sailboats

Thanks for this. So many people suggest racing as a means to learn how to sail, without mentioning that finding a boat to race on isn't as easy as putting your name and details on SpinSheet.

3. You have to learn to put up with lots of ribbing from old salts in your marina and on the internet who've been sailing 40 years and can dock their boat single-handed in a gale...

Re: Liveaboard woman alone

I'm a 'weekend' liveaboard, and a fairly new sailor. You've gotten a lot of good advice here, so my perspective will just be the 'things that surprised me about owning/living on a boat'.

1. How...

Re: Size vs. Condition/Amenities?

I wouldn't want to live on my boat for long, and it's not much smaller than the 30. Even a weekend camping out can feel cramped after a couple of days. Another vote for bigger. 40 feet (+2/-2)...

Re: What kind of work do you do to finance your sailing?

I'm an economist in the federal statistical system.

So I can't help but point out that your poll requests individual occupations, but all your response buttons are industries. Very bad survey...

Re: Don't have to be rich to sail

Well, it's kind of a silly comment to make, isn't it? It's like approaching someone's family and saying, 'I would totally have kids of my own, but I can't afford to send them to college. You must be...

Re: Who is divorced because of sailing?

Not me. I'm doing my best to turn my wife into a sailor. I don't think she'll ever be as enthusiastic as me, but I take great care to make sure she has a wonderful time when we go out.

In the...

Re: Movies with a lot sailing

Someone has already mentioned it, but I greatly enjoyed "Maidentrip". It's a documentary about a Dutch teenager who sails around the world.
