Re: Pros and cons of steel sailboats

[QUOTE=Panope;2061641]I hear ya on the safety while the boat is on the hard. I think if I had a boat with no lifelines I would at least have a provision for temporary solid lines when hauled out.

Re: keel cooling

Personally, I don't want any other system.

My boat will be keel cooled, Without any uneccesary drag do to using the hollow skeg as the radiator. It is streamlined, has the prop shaft shoved...

Re: Pros and cons of steel sailboats

I will try to Post pictures when I get some time on the computer.

The stanchions are 30 inches, and they follow the shear of the boat, So basically, they are anywhere from 35" to 39" off the deck...

Re: Pros and cons of steel sailboats

I put my solid lifelines up the other day.
Welded stainless steel to the stainless steel bulwark pipe.
Man, it made it so much nicer up on the boat. I worry alot less about hitting the ground...

Re: Pros and cons of steel sailboats

Brent came over today.
Spent the afternoon giving me ideas and guidance on the boat. Then we went for an ice cream in the harbour. I Cant imagine having a better boat designer.
He really gets...

Re: Zen and the art of 'bottom feeding'... please contribute!

Really, there isn't much you cant just make yourself out of scrap.
If youve got a steel boat, you are way ahead of the game. If you got welding skills, then you are laughing.

Im just finishing...

Re: Pros and cons of steel sailboats

[QUOTE=Panope;2033930]Dirtyfloats:

First, by "extrusion" I will assume you meant to say a "modern mast oval cross section extrusion" as my schedule 80 water pipe mast is also an extrusion.

I...

Re: Pros and cons of steel sailboats

Panope:

In the end, how did building the tapered aluminum mast, compare cost wise to an extrusion? even a used one?
Seems like a lot of welding time, gas, consumables, etc...

Re: Sail Drives?

Absolutely doomed.
There was a time when i thought, inboard/outboards were the stupidest thing ever put aboard a boat. Then i saw a saildrive.... they simply wont pass the test of time, like a...

Re: Voyaging on $500 per month

Paradise for sure.
In my version i don't go any further south than lasquitti.
Avoid nanaimo like the plague and no more than a few days in comox at a time. Everything north of that is fantastic....

Re: Pros and cons of steel sailboats

As far as sandblasting goes.
I'm still not sure if i will have to do it. Depends on how long it takes me to finish the boat out. I built with pre primed plate with the intention of avoiding...

Re: Pros and cons of steel sailboats

Nice boat panope. Looks really well done.

Even the words hull to deck joint make me cringe though.

One question though.
Why all the trouble of the octagonal mast/ boom?
Just to accommodate a...

Re: Pros and cons of steel sailboats

Sure,
For some strange reason (well strange to me at least) steel sailboats just are not that common. Even in places where virtually every working boat is of steel or aluminum.
Maybe it just says...

If its only now and again, and you are mostly doing thin stainless, i would have a look at the miller...

Re: Pros and cons of steel sailboats

I'm obviously not comparing road traffic to boat traffic. That's ridiculous. I'm just saying accidents are something to consider.
North of the 50th parallel, the preferred vehicle seems to be...
