Re: how to splice rope
Pull-through fids work well. I use a metal wire coat hanger for a quick job or have one made up from stainless steel welding rod with a narrow loop formed at one end. The palm, waxed thread and...

Re: Dodgers: Do we need one on our boat?
Dodgers--I lost interest when they left Brooklyn--
But on a boat--anyone can be uncomfortable. I like the quick-collapse and remove type. In a bad storm a dodger could act like a sail and could...

Re: Reduction in anchor scope with chain use
There is only the rule of common sense. The weight of chain rather than length is important--but in deep water you have to use nylon or you will simply not be able to recover all the chain if it is...

Re: Considering doing Live Aboard. (Need Advise)
Any heat source needs to be chosen carefully. If the flame is not enclosed it will probably produce carbon monoxide gas--odourless and very deadly. Any heater used at an anchorage has to have its...

Re: Considering doing Live Aboard. (Need Advise)
I have lived aboard a 42 foot trimaran with some home comforts, namely a gas got water system and electric heating and cooling, but I lived on a berth with water and power supplied. It was like...

Re: Galley counter-ceramic tiles
Has anyone thought of using the water-based epoxy stuff used over concrete floors in commercial kitchens? I had thought of making the top from epoxy saturated plywood. then placing in the sink, then...

Re: spare anchor
Sounds good. I use mine on the bottom, but hanging it close to the bottom would still improve an anchor's holding capability. When the vessel surges back against the anchor on a wave, the weight...

Re: spare anchor
The performance of most anchors is enhanced by using a Kellick or Angel which is a weight of about twenty to thirty pounds which is placed in the anchor chain about eight feet into the chain from...

Re: Fresh Water Pump turns on with faucets closed
If your pressure switch turns off at 40PSI you only need to put about twenty PSI in the tank--or your pump will only behave as if it had no accumulator tank. The pressure reaches 40 psi (fifty in my...

Re: spare anchor
I have no idea of the type of conditions you experience in the Pacific North West, but if your vessel is over forty feet might I suggest you already have a good spare anchor. What you do not have...

Re: Fresh Water Pump turns on with faucets closed
If the pump is sucking air and the tank level is not falling--there is a leak above the tank and air is getting into the pump. My pump switches off when water pressure builds up but it will not...

Re: Adding AC outlets to my boat?
If you try to charge your phone from a cigarette lighter outlet on 12 volts--just make sure you put a fuse in the circuit. I suggest 10 amps--and an enclosed fuse is safer in a boat.

Re: Adding AC outlets to my boat?
I wired my boat for AC but I have it rigged for shore power or generator as well as for an inverter. One only has to make sure that it is set up so that they do not all operate at the same time.
