Re: How to keep my rudder from falling off?

Sure, I will do that in the next couple days.
Seems like none of them have been sailed in the last 40 years; though I am quite satisfied with mine.

Re: What does a centerboard do?

Okay, so the centerboard is useful for best sailing, but it isn't the vital component I always thought it was, is that about right?

Other boats I have had were pretty flat on the bottom, while the...

What does a centerboard do?

Okay, a stupid question. The centerboard stops the boat from sliding to the side when the wind pushes it. But....

I have a 12' Petrel; it is basically an aluminum row boat rigged for sailing....

Flotation and righting a capsized boat...

I have a 50 year old 12' aluminum sailboat. It had enough flotation to keep it from sinking, but not by much. I stuffed a couple old life vests under the seats and it rides much higher now. I was...

Re: How to keep my rudder from falling off?

I ordered a Rudder Retaining Clip from Duckwork. That is a great place! I ordered a bunch of little things from them.

In the meanwhile I will try tying it down.
Thanks all for the help.

Re: How to keep my rudder from falling off?

The bent piece of metal you referred to would be similar to the top item at duckworksbbs?

How to keep my rudder from falling off?

I just bought a 50 year old Petrel; a 12' aluminum sailboat. I can't find anyone who has used it in the last 25 years for info on how to use it.

I noticed that there was nothing to secure the...

How to run my jibsheets?

I have a 12' aluminum boat called a Petrel.
After replacing most of the parts, I took it out yesterday, but am confused by how run the jibsheets.

I ran them inside the sidestays, as I thought was...

This is mine.

Re: What is this screw on my gooseneck for?

Assuming something was missing, I tried to guess what it was, and make the attached. (I made the knob yesterday, just try to find a 10-32 knob!) I had to remove the washers as they don't fit my...

Re: What is this screw on my gooseneck for?

The tab is one piece with the metal band.
And yes, the gooseneck sides up and down freely.

I thought the knob might hold it in place (and I can't imagine what else it could be), but putting a...

What is this screw on my gooseneck for?

This is a 12' Petrel. There is a screw with two plastic washers on it in the gooseneck. I thought maybe it was to lock the gooseneck in position on the mast, but when I put a knob on it nothing...

Re: Confused by the lines on my 12' sailboat

I am going to do my mainsheet similar to the video. I have a one pulley on the boom in between the two he has; but no holes where his pulleys are.

I can't see how he did his outhaul, but I think...

Re: Confused by the lines on my 12' sailboat

I should have included these pictures with my first post. Sorry.

Boom3 is the end of the boom, showing the eye for the outhaul and the pulley.
Boom2 is the odd pulley in the middle of the boom....

Confused by the lines on my 12' sailboat

I bought a 12' aluminum Petrel. Neither the seller, nor various other people selling them on the internet seem to recall how the lines ran. Apparently they were semi-popular 35 years ago and then...

Re: How is a cable attached here?

It is a Petrel. A very obscure 12' aluminum boat.
It has to be the forestay; it is the only thing on the front of the mast. I "believe" the boat was made with thimbles around the tang. The boat...

How is a cable attached here?

I am replacing the frontstay on my "new" sailboat. It was attached like the sidestay in the picture. Is that the correct way? The odd shape suggest that maybe something else is called for.

I...

Re: Some issues with cable (forestay)

I can use one end already made; I thought you were saying I needed two at the new end! Makes more sense now.

It is fresh water and will be at the top of the mast. Still, I understand your...

Re: Some issues with cable (forestay)

The cables are good, its the aluminum tubes that took a beating.
Yes, a turnbuckle.
Why 2 thimbles? I can't picture where more than one would go.

The nearest West Marine is 50 miles away. The...

I need a manual for a Petrel (12' aluminum)

I just bought a 40 year old Petrel. There are a few confusing things about it, and I would dearly like a manual. Anyone got one they could share?

Some issues with cable (forestay)

I just bought a 40 year old Petrel. It is 12' long, with a 20' mast and 100sf of sail. The stays are 3/32". The forestay has two frayed wires.

So my questions...
1) Can I use the frayed...

How is it as a rowing shell?

I want to buy a modest sailboat, and saw this here. My sense from reading the posts here is that it is not a great sailboat, but does work.

I already have an Alden 18 rowing shell which I use...
