Re: Self Tailing Winches
Asdf38, I'd like to know, too.
My Bristol 29.9 came with Lewmar 30 non-self-tailers, chromed bronze winches with a good bit of the chrome worn off. I added Winchers and they do a pretty good job,...

Re: Making Your Boat Unsinkable
I have one hugely-unpopular thing to say about this:
MacGregor 26.
Roger MacGregor built foam flotation into his boats, so they're 'unsinkable' ... it can be holed and full of water, but the...

Re: Wire halyard through random block.
I've steered clear of wire halyards ... partially, because I think NOT.
From what I've seen, wire-halyard sheaves have a different line profile. Just looked in the WM catalog, to confirm-or-deny...

Re: Bristol 35.5 Offshore and Liveaboard?
I have its little brother, a Bristol 29.9, also a keel/centerboard design. I have never noticed centerboard slap at anchor (and I am familiar with it, having had a MacGregor 26X previous to this...

The Leopard 46 I helped to deliver from Roatan 'toward' the Turks & Caicos, last November - the delivery that went to hell - had an Inmarsat phone installed. When we started taking on water (I'm not...

Re: Full or fin keel?
I described my Mac 26X, Bossa Nova, as a 26-foot, sleep-aboard sailing dinghy, that can also serve as a funny-shaped travel trailer. It's a very good first boat, for someone who hasn't decided...

Halcyon came with a two-burner Origo built into its countertop. It may not be as hot as propane or natural gas, but it boils up a quart of water quick enough to make my morning coffee and my evening...

Ohhh-kayyy! I have commissioned my wheel pilot and I am ready to buy it a diamond ring. It works very well and it's better-modulated than the one I have on my old boat.
Spent the day out sailing....

I think the Spade (and the Raya, while it was being built) have that wide curve in the shank to make their anchors too unstable to stay upside-down if they land that way.

Annapolis north, western Chesapeake Bay
I keep Bossa Nova on the Middle River, in the eastern suburbs of Baltimore. I'd be glad to help out, say, on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay, from Annapolis to Havre de Grace.
