Re: Self Tailing Winches

Asdf38, I'd like to know, too.

My Bristol 29.9 came with Lewmar 30 non-self-tailers, chromed bronze winches with a good bit of the chrome worn off. I added Winchers and they do a pretty good job,...

Re: Making Your Boat Unsinkable

I have one hugely-unpopular thing to say about this:

MacGregor 26.

Roger MacGregor built foam flotation into his boats, so they're 'unsinkable' ... it can be holed and full of water, but the...

Re: Wire halyard through random block.

I've steered clear of wire halyards ... partially, because I think NOT.

From what I've seen, wire-halyard sheaves have a different line profile. Just looked in the WM catalog, to confirm-or-deny...

Re: Bristol 35.5 Offshore and Liveaboard?

I have its little brother, a Bristol 29.9, also a keel/centerboard design. I have never noticed centerboard slap at anchor (and I am familiar with it, having had a MacGregor 26X previous to this...

Re: Sat Phone - Rent or Buy and which one

The Leopard 46 I helped to deliver from Roatan 'toward' the Turks & Caicos, last November - the delivery that went to hell - had an Inmarsat phone installed. When we started taking on water (I'm not...

Re: Full or fin keel?

I described my Mac 26X, Bossa Nova, as a 26-foot, sleep-aboard sailing dinghy, that can also serve as a funny-shaped travel trailer. It's a very good first boat, for someone who hasn't decided...

And for those of us with MacGregor motorsailers, like my old 26X?

The best of both worlds ... and the worst.:laugher

Re: Alcohol stoves in use?

Halcyon came with a two-burner Origo built into its countertop. It may not be as hot as propane or natural gas, but it boils up a quart of water quick enough to make my morning coffee and my evening...

Re: Smart Pilot Raymarine X5 Wheel Pilot

Ohhh-kayyy! I have commissioned my wheel pilot and I am ready to buy it a diamond ring. It works very well and it's better-modulated than the one I have on my old boat.

Spent the day out sailing....

Re: Smart Pilot Raymarine X5 Wheel Pilot

I've got mine installed - but due to family matters, I haven't been able to take it out and commission the SmartPilot system yet.

The newer system comes with a "SeaTalk ng" network, which is more...

Re: Another "Next Generation" anchor enters the market...

I think the Spade (and the Raya, while it was being built) have that wide curve in the shank to make their anchors too unstable to stay upside-down if they land that way.

Re: Another "Next Generation" anchor enters the market...

Very nice. MedSailor, your photos (and your bolt-strength chart) do a lot to convince me. The bolts don't look like a 'weak link' any more! I'm likely to come shopping for an oversized Mantus when...

Re: Smart Pilot Raymarine X5 Wheel Pilot

Thank you all, to the folks who resurrected this thread.

I put a Raymarine X-5 Smart Pilot on my MacGregor 26X, Bossa Nova, a few years ago. It did a pretty good job, when I used it; but I did...

Greg,

Thank you for 'coming on board' to discuss this anchor with us! It looks interesting to me as a 'backup' or 'big backup / storm' anchor, even though I do have my reservations about the...

Re: Full or fin keel?

Yahhh ... but Hinckley makes a gorgeous boat. And you didn't buy Ibis to back her up, now, did you? ;)

2011 was my first year with a proper keelboat, a Bristol 29.9 - and as much as I learned...

Thank you, everybody - though this wasn't my question.

My malady was four times worse, as it was four-foot-itis ... from a very light, water-ballasted MacGregor 26X that lives on its trailer...

Another manufacturer is EBuyMarine.com - their "Port-Vents" are perhaps a little deeper (come down a little lower on ports), and they're made in smoke-tinted polycarbonate. They also make Port-Vents...

Annapolis north, western Chesapeake Bay

I keep Bossa Nova on the Middle River, in the eastern suburbs of Baltimore. I'd be glad to help out, say, on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay, from Annapolis to Havre de Grace.

I've been telling people that Bossa Nova is "a 26-foot dinghy" and I guess your remark confirms it. (She's a MacGregor 26X, water-ballast, swing-down centerboard, ridiculously powerful engine.) ...

Moonsailer, what boat are you sailing? Just curious....

Any boat that gets enough water in it to cancel out its "empty space" buoyancy is going to sink. That's a given. Some boats (think...

Even though Bossa Nova is up east of Baltimore now - and I'll be driving to the Boat Show - I can't quite say "not my problem" because this is emblematic of the anchor-out situation.

I'm all for...

Should have tried this first. That is a "Receita Federal" tax stamp on the can.
