Re: Found This Bristol for Sale - Thoughts for New Sailors?

The good: cheap, built really solid, looks like it is still decent

Bad: long overhangs will hobbyhorse in a sea, if that engine quits it ain't worth repowering.

Get a survey -- might be a great...

Re: Retiring soon...

Hey Eric - You kinda talk about this sailing thing like it is, at best, a financial plan. Maybe you want to try to find something you really like and pursue that. Nothing about life on a boat is...

Happy spring!

Re: behavior on other's boats

Nonono. I think that is totally the wrong lesson KJ! Justremember that when you get a tweeker aboard, they often need a "hey, I like the boat in a groove like this . . . we can get more out of her...

Re: Need advice on choosing a Boat

Sounds like fun Eric! I wonder whether you can't accomplish that in a boat in the middle range without too much "upgrading". Is it just you living aboard? I was happy as hell on a 33'er (very...

Re: Need advice on choosing a Boat

There are so many things that make price and length less than the ideal criteria for evaluation (not to sound like SD :-) ) Can you tell us where you sail and what (besides living on the boat) you'd...

Re: Radar - what to look for

Mike -
I don't know enough about BBR to compare / contrast for you. BBR does seem to have impressive close range clarity. However, the HD also works well at close range. For instance, I can make...

Re: Multi-Day Offshores: The Elephant In The Salon

I think experience and anxiety from lack of experience are significant factors. You can't overstate the value of having "been through that" before . . . it can change the entire character of a...

Re: $3000/mo cruising budget

Seems to me that if you could get that seasickness under control you'd be able to manage those grocery bills :)

Glad you chimed in here. I was beginning to think I'd need to find 5K a month . . ....

Re: learning about waves...

Swell vs. waves is a good thing to consider and start to understand. A 15' long period swell might be nothing (kind of an enjoyable up and down to your sailing) 15' waves are another thing entirely....

Re: Mutiny at Dawn - Transpac Race 2013

I'm not sure I agree with everything below (I definitely agree with an awful lot of it and need to chew on some of the rest). But this is one of the best posts in the thread - IMO -- just for form,...

Re: Am I an 'operator' at anchor?

You can always be charged under the federal law -- so the state law should be viewed as possibly worse (harsher) but not as a lower burden. I have zero confidence that "at anchor" excepts you from...
