Jim,

Brad Linthicum was recommended to me by my local Hobie dealer (who has experience in many more sailboats than Hobies). I've used Brad for years with no complaints.

I think I might use the old pattern with countersunk screws from the pads to the mast (as you describe), if just to keep out water. The additional strength couldn't hurt either....

Depends on your boat ;-)

Till it looks like it wouldn't be any fun out there.... I've gone out through five footers with the Hobie. It also depends on how they break, and the period.

That is kind of in-line with what I was thinking. Electronics are usually made for low humidity environs, unless they are specifically designed for something else, IE...

One problem with mounting near the batteries (unless somehow sealed) - from the Blue Sky manual

This unit employs components that tend to produce arcs or sparks. NEVER install in battery...

Are you contending with waves also?

Adapting Hobie methods...

1. Fully rig the boat. Do not cleat the main sheet.

2. Walk the boat out as far as you can and still have reasonable control...

I believe the statement about 'newfangled' jackets comes from the fact that in the US, children under 16 are not permitted to use an inflatable PFD.

Do you have the option of running inside, rather than the ocean? On an unfamiliar boat, I'd have to think about being conservative..... And I see you're from NJ; as others have said, don't forget...
