Re: Single handed sailing in BVI

Do any charter companies down there allow you to go out single handed? I've also wondered if any of them charter smaller boats (20-26 ft) for microcruising for us minimalists and cheapskates.

Re: Enlarging hole for screw-out deck plate? File? Dremel?

Is that preferable or necessary if I'm using a washer and nut?

I found that screwing a threaded screw thru a small hole in the fiber glass was very difficult..... I imagine it might make a better...

Re: Enlarging hole for screw-out deck plate? File? Dremel?

One more question:

When using a threaded machine screw (as opposed to a thru bolt in which the section near the head has no threads).... am I supposed to drill the pilot hole small enough so that...

Re: Enlarging hole for screw-out deck plate? File? Dremel?

Well I did it. I did put a little sealant under the heads of the screws since I didn't have a chance to read the last post and it was recommended in the Beckson instructions and various other...

Do you also put sealant under the head of the screws?

Re: Enlarging hole for screw-out deck plate? File? Dremel?

Yes. I have the removable plate and the permanent mounting ring.

Next... how to drill holes and put the screws/bolts in there. I have some of that 5200 stuff and some quick setting epoxy.

Enlarging hole for screw-out deck plate? File? Dremel?

My boat has a circular hole in the cockpit at the stern between the tiller and the motor well for my outboard (which sits in the cockpit). I think it exists so you can get in there and access the...

Re: Any seaworthy swing keel, row-able boats, with cabin.

No. When there is wind I sail. The rowing would be for when there is no wind or the rig fails. Or when I am trying to go through the Ballard locks - not allowed to sail in and out of the locks.

Re: Any seaworthy swing keel, row-able boats, with cabin.

That's really good sailing and seamanship you describe.

But I started this thread to learn more about swing keel sailboats that can be rowed and beached, and that have some sort of cabin. I'm...

Re: Any seaworthy swing keel, row-able boats, with cabin.

Didn't notice any humor in your reply. Just thought you were being really condescending.

I can sail on and off the dock just fine if the wind is blowing. More difficult when there's no wind....

Re: Any seaworthy swing keel, row-able boats, with cabin.

Denise-

Learn how to read. Read my post again. Then learn how to type. Then offer a useful suggestion if you feel so inclined.

I didn't have three fails, I think I used the word "possibility". ...

Any seaworthy swing keel, row-able boats, with cabin.

I really like sailing my simple 24 ft keelboat with 4 ft draft. I don't want anything bigger or more complex since I usually single hand and I am a minimalist.

The things that I don't like are:...

Re: Can/does anyone sail from Kona to Hilo?

Could one take a long port tack past South Point out to sea away from the coastal wind and current, then come about and head up on a starboard close reach to Hilo?

People sail from the leeward...

Can/does anyone sail from Kona to Hilo?

I am curious...perhaps some of our Hawaiian brothers and sisters can answer this question.

I have read plenty accounts of sailing from Hilo to the leeward side of the Big Island. But how often...

Re: Single handed anchoring questions

I see your point.... I have a 16.5 lb Bruce with 15 feet of 3/8 chain with 185 ft of rode. I am fortunate that I can handle the weight and pull it up quickly. My method may be unsuitable for your...

Re: Single handed anchoring question

Great question! Again, this is why I do everything from cockpit. First i cleat the proximal rode at stern and release rode from bow cleat. Boat swings stern to wind and rode tensions again. Start...

Re: Single handed anchoring questions

Well here's an update. I sail single handed all the time. And I have been practicing anchoring. My awesome method:
1. Store anchor, chain and rode in cockpit locker
2. Approach anchorage slowly by...

Die hard battery charger? Ok for deep cycle marine?

I have had my boat for almost two years. It came with an inexpensive Die Hard charger/maintainer and my outboard charges it too (supposedly). I have never had the battery run low or die. I have no...

Halyards turning black

The segments of my main and jib halyard that "live" inside of my mast when the sails are down are becoming darkly discolored. I've had the boat 2 years and have only noticed it with in the last few...

In an Advanced Elements inflatable kayak, can one stand up whilst next to the sailboat and climb in relatively easily? I don't have a swim deck or swim ladder.

Re: Moving from fresh to salt water moorage - questions

Yeah, I can pull it out of the well. I'm trying to think if I can then clamp it on the transom or one of the sidewalls of the well so that the prop is up out of the salt water.

Still fixating on...

Re: Moving from fresh to salt water moorage - questions

Alex-

Unfortunately my motor doesn't pivot out of the water, its stuck in a well near the transom.

Do I need zincs? Even if I pull the motor out every time I still have a through-hull... does...

Moving from fresh to salt water moorage - questions

I enjoy sailing in Puget Sound much more than Lake Washington, but it takes nearly three hours to motor through the shipping canal and locks. Thinking about mooring my boat at Shilshole.

If I...
