Re: Anchor question

I almost hate to ask this, but I've been wondering about this myself.. We own a 30' lightweight boat (Olson 30- about 4200 lbs all up) and I think the anchor is a galvanized steel Danforth. I believe...

Re: Tethering singlehanded

Hey, Aaron- maybe practice makes perfect? One thing about jacklines running forward- they really should be tight and with quite a few twists (so you can easily pick them up to clip on with the other...

Re: New Marine Weather Site

Yep, agree with all others.. I enter "Tampa, Fl" and get lots of Maine and North Carolina hits, but nothing in Florida. I entered "33617" (my zip code) and see the same results...

Re: Why Going Aloft On A Shackle Is A Bad Idea

Couldn't agree more. I use either a Petzel climbing harness or bosuns chair (depending on how long I'm going to be up there), but always tie bowlines in each of two lines when going up. I have both...

Re: Bowsprit sizing question

I was speaking with a sailmaker here in Tampa (I'm thinking of doing something similar, just no furler) and he mentioned that I could add 10% of my "J" (which is almost 12' in my case) with minimal...

Re: Indy Canvas Charleston, SC Unprofessional Unresponsive

I had a very similar experience with Indy Canvas, but I lived in Charleston at the time. I knew another boat (Swan 56) and he did really good work outfitting that with two dodgers and a bimini, so...

Re: Cruising Gear

Also keep in mind my cruising grounds are probably quite modest compared to most, so I have no a/c, generator, refrigerator, tv or radar on our Olson 30.. The next boat however, probably will have at...

Re: best repair for stripped thread in the boom

Is there any reason you couldn't use a blind rivet? I think it would provide a more robust longer term solution.. Most (if not all) of the hardware installed on my spars are done with good quality ss...

Re: Am I an SOB?

I think you did awesome, Chainplate! If I were the one in need of help like that, I would have been grateful for what you did do. Especially knowing they had escorts willing to take them where they...

Re: Mid range foulie pants

I have the Henri Lloyd ocean bibs and they are bomb-proof- very comfortable (light weight) easy to get in and out of (the zipper on the jacket is a bit of a bear to get started), and since they are...

Re: Question About Accidental Gybes

Most of the autopilots racers use when singlehanding allow you to sail to an apparent wind angle that allows some safety while sleeping. The wind does shift around, and when you throw in a mix of...

Re: Any Solo Sailors?

Dave- we (wife and I) are in a similar boat.. As we age up, we find ourselves slowing down a bit. We came from a lifestyle of bike racing, triathlons and running, but that was when we lived in...

Re: Can bleach damage FRP

Not terribly bad on FRP, but it will corrode metals (eg. keelbolts). You can dilute it out and it will still kill mold/fungus, but I'd limit the extent you expose anything metal to bleach solutions...

Re: Best inflatable pfd with harness.

We use Spinlocks with WM tethers. The crotch straps just get in the way too much and are a pain in the arse to get into when it's dark, so we prefer to cinch the waist down snugly after putting it on...

Re: Greatest fear?

My own personal fear (when single-handing) is falling overboard. I get quite goofy when I'm tired, but that's one reason I can't quite wrap my head around doing the Bermuda 1-2 this year.

Re: Jib Sheets yet again

I'll put in a vote for Maxibraid. We've had those now for the 2+ years I've had our boat, and they were about 3 yrs old when we bought it. They are awesome sheets, and I can't imagine a better...

Re: Stereo install

It is kinda hard to beat the bluetooth speakers coming out these days.. I've always installed speakers behind inspection ports on the boats we've owned, and that works well if you really want those...

Re: sailing as exercise?

Yep, I would agree with Don. There's just not enough aerobic effort (like brisk walking or cycling..) for any cardiac benefit to be realized, and there certainly isn't much in the way of...

Re: Henri Lloyd Ocean Explorer Jacket Sizing

I have that same model of jacket/bibs (1 year old now) and they are sized like the guys above say- a bit big to accommodate a couple of layers underneath.

Re: When Do You Reef?

We race and cruise about 50/50, and I singlehand about 50% of the time I cruise. Reefing the main is done anywhere between 15-20% of heel angle (or more- my boat is really light and tender, so it...

Re: Boat brands to stick with for ocean rough seas?

I'm all ears on this thing. The $200k price is attractive (even without all the stuff we'd undoubtedly have to outfit that boat with- it comes with nothing but sails and control lines).
