Re: Centerboard damage.

Perhaps there was some other stuff in there eherlihy, but I didn’t see any evidence of it, just bits of resin. The rudder bearing was cast out of pure resin also. I noticed it crumbling at haul out...

Centerboard damage.

We’d been having issues raising and lowering the CB. Towards the end of this season things got markedly worse. Thought I’d have the folks at the marina drop it at haul out and see what gives. ...

Re: Knock Down!

I fly the main during a race on my boat (too chicken to drive), and do the same.
Pop the traveler, trim in hard, ease it out relatively quick on the other side.
Much easier on the gear…and any...

Re: Knock Down!

That boom coming across at 3:11 almost gave new meaning to the term “Deck sweeper”.

1:04 was the knockdown, that boom could have clobbered someone good there, too.

Re: Knock Down!

What I found amazing was that this boat (J-35) went on to cross the line first in their class, correcting to second, and they took a third overall.

What makes a finish like that even more unlikely...

Knock Down!

We were a stake boat for one of the last races of the year.

Temps in the upper 40’s.
West winds at 18, gusting to 24 knots true.
Waves 1 to 3 feet.

At our mark, the 2nd, racers were rounding...

Re: Seeking interior laminate advice

From what I could see in the pics, the damage looks relatively minor. I would try using a product like “Liquid Gold” or “Old English” that you can find at most grocery or home improvement stores. ...

Re: new 120% genoa

Here’s how it broke down for us on a 40 footer:

The Dacron sails, main and 135 genoa, were going around $2700 each. With a re-cut here and there they were expected to last 20 years. They will...

Re: Rigging up an A-sail

At 19k displacement she’s a heavy beast, and very tender. She’ll go over 25 to 30 degrees without much thought or provocation at all. Given that, we had the sail maker (Doyle) come out and look at...

Re: Rigging up an A-sail

Appreciate the feedback.

Treilley- Yea, I spend a fair amount of time on those sites. Lots of good general info there, but not much on racing the boat.

Zz4gta- We’ve got a ton of work to do...

It's an Irwin 39, not many of them out there.

Rigging up an A-sail

We’ve discovered that the JAM credit doesn’t nearly compensate us for not flying a spinnaker/Asym, and in order to get in the game, we’ve got to start flying a kite (our local race series doesn’t...

Re: Centerboard position - keel/centerboard Tartan 37 upwind

That’s been my experience as well.

Also, on a reach in heavier air, we tend to add a little more centerboard to help keep us from slipping sideways, and trim the sails for balance.

Lowering the...

Re: Centerboard position - keel/centerboard Tartan 37 upwind

I think you are referring to moving the center of lateral resistance (CLR) to help balance the helm (usually to tame weather helm).

Here is a good article on the subject:

Helm Balance – Center...

Re: Centerboard position - keel/centerboard Tartan 37 upwind

On my boat in particular, yes, we can point OK in about 5 knots true with the board up. We can come up a little closer with the board down, or partially down, but we can lose up to half a knot of...

Re: Adding couple more layers of varnish

One of my woodworking rags ran a test on finishes. Epiphanies came out on top of the finishes they tried (which did not include the Pettit).

Downside is the Epiphanies is about 50 bucks a quart...

Re: What class is my PHRF boat? A,B,C

For boats without an official, measured rating, our club uses this to assign a temporary rating.

Relentless race 12, 2011

I believe I posted this in a thread some time back.

Last race of the 2011 season.

We started in 5~10 knots and as we rounded the second mark to weather, we got slammed with gusts in the...

Re: Centerboard position - keel/centerboard Tartan 37 upwind

We have an Irwin Citation 39 CB, similar to the Tartan, that we race.
Under 10 knots apparent we leave it full up.
We start lowering it as the apparent winds build. By 20 knots apparent it is full...

To be honest, I haven’t started yet.

Over a couple of beers, we found out exactly what happened on that rounding.

The first boat to round had a new guy on the foredeck. Because we were in heavy air, their intent was to reef the main...

I’ve been asked that before, why we put bottom paint on here, and I really don’t have a good answer.

We had the sails cleaned last winter and the sail maker (Doyle) rated the main as in poor condition and the head sail (155 genny) in fair condition.

A 40 knot gust blew out the main for us early...
