Re: Boat won't come up into wind

The OP never said the sailboat falls off when the helm is released. Maybe the sail plan is perfectly balanced?

My little Privateer 26 schooner will balance to the point where I can let the tiller...

Re: $3500 inexpensive bluewater cruiser

The Cascade 29 has good performance numbers for it's size. That's a good deal if it is a solid boat. I would consider that model if I were single handing a bluewater passage.

Re: Public Service Announcement

My wife and I sailed our Cheoy Lee 31 from Key West to Penobscot Bay. We did most of the trip outside, but came in to Elizabeth City and took the Dismal Swamp canal to Portsmouth, VA. We didn't do...

Re: Installing a lifting eye and need to bolt to lead

Do you have keel bolts? Or, is the ballast inside the keel?

I put a lifting eye on a Santana 20 using an eye nut on one of the keel bolts.

McMaster-Carr...

Re: Icw

Having done some of the ICW and most of the east coast outside; I much prefer the outside. Even in our 31' Cheoy Lee ketch; going outside was easy and enjoyable with the right weather windows....

Re: Sailing around the world on a $10,000 sailboat

The Bristol 26 has a higher capsize risk and a lower motion comfort rating than the Bristol 24 or 27. However, I'm sure it would do ok for voyaging if properly modified. My Bristol 24 does fine...

Re: A Ketch into a Cutter...or not

I'd rather handle the mizzen from the cockpit, than have to go up and deal with the staysail in rough weather. With a ketch rig; a short handed crew can sail jib and mizzen anytime the wind picks up....

Re: Lower rudder bushing

I've cast a bushing in place on my Bristol 24 7 years ago, using JB weld metal filled epoxy. I also used Vaseline on the shaft. It has held up perfectly since then.

Re: Ocean baby rescue underway off Mexico

What a ridiculous statement! About 75% of the world lives more than a day from "real" medical care. With that statement as a guide; we certainly shouldn't ever let our children ride in cars. A trip...

Here's how one couple temporarily solved the money problem while living aboard.

Re: crazy boom question

Shipping for the boom would be $250.00. So unless you know someone driving past my house on I 70; it would not be cost effective.

Re: crazy boom question

I have a boom that is about 10'5". I'd have to check for sure. It's yours if you can get it from central Illinois.

Re: What did you learn to sail on?

My first sailing was done on an ice boat. Learned some basic things about wind and sails on that. Then my wife won a Super Snark, and we learned how to sail on water. My real sailing education came...

Re: Voyaging on $500 per month

Several years ago, I bought a Magellan Nav 5000DLX hand held GPS off ebay. I think I paid $25.00 or so for the GPS, cradle, manual, and 12V power cord. These units cost over $1000.00 in the early...

Re: Voyaging on $500 per month

My wife puts rice, flour, beans, etc., in the freezer for 2 weeks before vacuum bagging. The cold kills the bugs that are present in most grains and cereals, and vacuum bagging keeps other bugs out....

Re: Who is the best of the cheap sail makers...

I had 6 new sails made by Rolly Tasker for my little schooner, that cost about 1/2 of other sailmakers bids. All were custom made from my sketches and fit perfectly. Couldn't be more satisfied after...

Re: Cement Ballast - Pros/Cons

My Cheoy Lee 31' offshore ketch had concrete over cast iron ballast, with no issues after 45 years.
I have to say that the motion of that boat was the most comfortable of any sailboat I've ever...

Re: Wire rope clips vs. nicopress

Re: Voyaging on $500 per month

I'm sure I can get by on $500.00 a month cruising in my Bristol 24, by anchoring instead of staying in marinas, and eating Hormel "Compleats" meals, heated over a sterno can. If one stays away from...

Re: Voyaging on $500 per month

re: Missing endangered man on sailboat Florida

I've heard of sailors actually anchoring out in the gulf. I sailed from Pensacola to Key West a couple years ago, and the depth in some areas is only about 75 feet. In calmer conditions, one could...

Re: Stability

I think the "motion comfort" rating for boats is most accurate when the boat is at anchor. The type and location of the ballast makes a difference in that rating. Also, a sailboat that will go...

I agree that a real buyer wants all the info he can get from an ad. I have sold 3 sailboats from Craigslist ads. I put as much info and pictures as possible in the ads. All the boats sold to the...
