It appear as though the company that provides our Chat feature recently updated their software and now one of their modules is being 'mis-classified' by Norton/Symantec and possible containing a virus. Until they have this resolved we have de-activaed chat. We've opened a support incident with Envolve and they will hopefully have this corrected soon.

Re: Hot stuffing box...
Med, I'm happy to hear that they are considering alternatives. When I talked to the mechanic about my overheating problem he just gave me the "I've been doing this for forty years" talk and just...

Re: Hot stuffing box...
Med I had the same problem of a hot stuffing box on my Catalina 27. The spec on my boat (one inch shaft) is 3/16" packing. The mechanic I had do the work put in 1/4" packing. I didn't think much...

Re: Keel Bolts
The help I was looking for was about how I was installing the bolts. I wasn't looking for thoughts on whether I'm wasting my time. Never asked if I thought they were needed, did I?

I see your skills go into psychoanalysis. Feeling wrong. No one is saying I'm wrong. Just that I don't need them. Take a look at your post. You're trying to tell me what I should and should not be...

Re: Keel Bolts
I asked about staggering the bolts versus side by side; how far down into the lead to go. The concerns were about the way I was doing it not that I should do it.

Re: Keel Bolts
When I took out all the wood there was an epoxy-like(hard as a rock) bedding compound(my description) that the plywood was set in, I presume. I never saw the lead, per se. I think I would have...

Re: Keel Bolts
Don, don't understand that you were looking at the top of the lead keel. You should have been looking at the top of the fiberglass which should be about 3/4" thick. Under that glass is the keel. Do...

Re: Keel Bolts
I had a professional re-glass the keel sump. I just removed all the plywood.
The keel sump is an issue with all C27's before 1988.
Two more bolts is adding to the strength to the keel...

Re: Keel Bolts
The load will just be spread further, which isn't a bad thing, is it? Catalina engineering decided to put the wood in the sump which wasn't a smart thing in my opinion. Anything can be improved, no?

I haven't replaced my standing rigging but I pulled it all and had it checked by a rigger. Checked out fine. As far as keel repairs go any prospective buyer will already see that my keel has been...

Mark, I sail in the same area as you, western Lake Erie. It's mostly a sand bottom but I do know there are some rocks, but not many. I have never run aground in my sailing but I don't really roam...

Re: Keel Bolts
MS, when you did this work to your C30, did you drill all new holes(C30's have 8 bolts, I believe)? If so how did you place the new bolt holes, in the same pattern as the originals, only a little in...

I'll second that. My next boat will have an encapsulated keel. My last one did. Too many worries-No joy.

Re: Keel Bolts
It's amazing that you had the leaks. Were the barrel bolts not filled with epoxy originally or were the barrel bolts so close to the outside of the keel that there was only a thin layer of epoxy?

[QUOTE=Minnewaska;986459]
I'm just cautioning against drilling additional holes in one's boat without a really good reason and firm engineering.
The reason would be to spread the keel load. I...

Re: Keel Bolts
How did you come to that conclusion? When a boat builder is getting a new keel for a new boat, to me, it wouldn't be cheaper too have the boat builder drilling holes and windows in the keel. To me...

Re: Keel Bolts
I am not depending on the epoxy to "hold" the load. It's taking up space around the bolt. The load is held by the plate and nut placed via the window. I wouldn't expect that the holding power of,...

Eherlihy, I can find that information from Catalina Yachts. And one of their fixes is to drill new holes and install lag bolts. To me that is not a good option. As long as you are drilling the long...

Eherly, thanks for the vote of confidence. If I drill in and don't find lead, I won't put the keel bolt in the hole. I may even stop drilling before I get to far. How far down does that foam go...

I will probably wait until I inspect a couple bolts to decide on adding others. But I have drilled through lead before and it really isn't a bad or difficult job. I would think using, say three...

Re: Keel Bolts
The wood was damp throughout but there was no "puddling" of water around the bolts, just dampness. Maybe there is water laying in around the laminate and next to the bolts.

[QUOTE=SloopJonB;985683] The only place they deteriorate is above the keel, either where they go through the hull (most common) or where they are visible in the bilge (obvious).
But that's why I...
