Re: Will 5 hp work on my 25 Catlina.

Should be fine for motoring in and out of a slip, on and off a mooring, up and down a protected channel, etc. But if you'll be motoring to windward in building seas or other such scenarios, the 5hp...

re: Survey all of them!

I agree with Denver - You'll probably have a strong sense of your favorite among the three after you personally view and inspect them each. Then make an offer. Then have it surveyed if you can agree...

Re: Our first good video

Dave - Between the iPhone, GoPro and Mac you've got all you need to make quality scrap book/sharing vids. Do you have the native iMovie app loaded on the Mac or iPhone? It's a bit wonky and takes...

Re: What Would You Do?

I vote for option 1. It sounds like you like the boat you've got, so enjoy it and save as much as you can for retirement. Purchasing a trailer-sailor isn't a sure-fire money saving plan, so I'd...

Re: tying to shore - rock climbing gear?

Not sure about the suitability of climbing gear for this application, but we have used plenty of pre-placed/installed d-rings in the granite rocks of the North Channel adjacent to where you are...

Re: Recommendation for cordless LED spotlight?

We've got a Streamlight Waypoint that I like a lot. It's powerful (300 lumens/80k candela), efficient and waterproof. You can read my review here: Streamlight Waypoint LED Spotlight...

Re: Advice for buying this Catalina 30

Looks like you've already got good advice in this thread, but I agree, this particular C30 wouldn't be a great choice for your first sailboat, regardless of price. There are plenty of well-loved...

Re: What Questions Would You Want Answered?

Based on the number of times I've seen it asked around here, many people will be interested in how to pay for/afford cruising and your personal story as it relates (investments, working while...

Re: Problem about Cockpit sole repair

Sounds like you're on the right track. In any case, here's an excerpt from Don Casey about installing a new deck hatch, but with a similar procedure which might be helpful:

When you make a...

Re: Which 27 ??

That's all. Just another $20-30k premium for the scoop and the MkII emblem! ;)

Off topic but the new engine (60 hours), new sails, new cockpit canvas, new upholstery, value and familiarity with...

Re: Which 27 ??

You'll love the C30. Very forgiving boat with more room down below than most 30 footers. The extra beam (compared to the 27's you were considering) literally makes a big difference. Plus, as you...

Re: Which 27 ??

And that brings up another bonus for the Catalina...there are lots of them out there (~6,600 hulls), so finding another in good condition should be too hard. And $15k should make that realistic.

Re: Which 27 ??

All of the boats mentioned would make fine "first" sailboats for learning and enjoying time on the water. Condition trumps all else in this case. Ratty sails and old running rigging can be replaced...

Re: Are sailing magazine articles boring?

There are a lot of valid points in this thread (re: appeasing advertisers, shortened/chopped articles, repeated themes, etc.), but I think sailing magazines tend to get a bad rap. There are still...

Re: what do you do for a living?

I'm not a liveaboard (yet) or making a living on my boat (yet), but I'd plan to do both one day. Seems there are nearly an infinite number of ways to earn a living while living on a sailboat so long...

I'm a big fan of White Squall.

I also just watched Laura Dekker's Maidentrip and came away impressed by how honest and raw her movie and story are. Still not something I'd let one of my young...

Re: winter boredom

Read. Write. Maintain. Upgrade. Plan. Scheme. Save.

Remember, the ocean needs the land. Or at least that's what I tell myself to justify months on the hard.
