Re: Painting at an auto-body shop

How do you get a 35 foot sailboat into a body shop paint booth? Does it have a big hole in the roof for the mast?

Re: Universal Diesel Thermostat from CarQuest

I just changed the thermostat on my Universal 5424, which I found never closed properly. It also opened at about 140F - both problems functions of old age, I guess.

I replaced it with a new 160F....

Re: Propane testing

Well, I'm coming around to the "no initial bubbles" way of thinking. Maybe I've been doing it wrong, or at least not the best way. Fortunately, my way still detected leaks if done with care, which is...

Re: Propane testing

The bubble stuff is just soap and water. The correct way to use it is to shake the bottle to generate some suds, then squirt them onto the joint, not liquid solution. If there is a leak, the bubbles...

Re: Battery Woes

I was going to switch my two group 24s to 6v, but the height was too tall. Ended up with US Battery 24 DCXC2s. Best of the 12V ones.

Re: Propane testing

When you open the valve on the bottle, what do you do? I used to think it was better to just crack the valve one turn, but that always resulted in a smell of propane in the locker. Now I open the...

Re: Leather Disgrace

I believe the problem was that the leather had not been properly washed of some corrosive chemicals used in the tanning process.

Re: Leather Disgrace

My Ronstans have been the best wearing pair of sailing gloves I've ever had. WM and Harkens didn't last a season.

Re: NMEA Frustration

I'm afraid that I found out that the instructions on connection supplied with my plotter were complete rubbish.

Based on your diagrams, I believe you need to connect :

NMEA out + on the...

Universal compression check confusion

In one part of the manual for the Universal 5424, it states a compression ratio of 21:1, which I calculate as translating to 305 PSI on a compression tester.

Elsewhere the specs state compression...

Re: Coolant puzzle

Try to pay attention. Read post 8. You are referring to an atmospheric catch tank, not an expansion tank.

Re: Problems when reefing Main Sail

One of the installation steps on the Garhauer rigid vang was to sheet the main in as hard as possible, and then install the vang fully or almost fully compressed. This way you cant have any bending...

Re: Coolant puzzle

If there isn't an atmospheric catch tank, the header tank is allowing for the expansion of the coolant, so it needs an air space at the top. I'd say about half way up is about right, when the engine...

Re: My Tow vehicle

A fan that doesn't roar for a minute on cold start is probably faulty. What should happen is that the fluid in the clutch is very thick when cold, thin when warm, and thick again when hot. So it has...
