Re: TV antennas

I have tried and installed many while working on boats. The Glomex is by far the best I have come across. Do not cheep out on the coax and connections that can make a big difference as well. The best...

Re: Boat insurance

Minnewaska sorry to say but with marine insurance there are no state regulations. It is not like auto or homeowners. It varies only by company. Companies may have state requirements but it is not...

Re: Boat insurance

I have Markel but have never had a claim so cannot say how they are after a claim. They are pretty good at taking my money though :)

Re: Sailing Magazines

Ok I confess a bit of thread drift but how many would be interested in or watch a video magazine particularly for maintenance and DIY type things? For that matter boat reviews and places done in a...

Re: Sealing deck through holes with balsa core

Most epoxies will not cure in a wet deck. I have had had to fix more than one deck that was "repaired" by injecting epoxy. It turns into a gooey mess that will not cure and has to be scraped out. If...

Re: Hull deck reassurance

Yes I am going with the Plexus because it is structural adhesive and will also seal. A secondary seal will be made with the toe rail. Butyl will add nothing to the strength of the joint. Butyl in my...

Re: Lifejacket Type Code Labels Go Away (BoatUS article)

The thing about life vests is they are more for the passengers than the skipper or capt. Few boats are run solo and when guests come aboard they rely on the skipper to have the right safety gear....

Re: Hull deck reassurance

Maybe some of the later Irwins have 5200 but I know mine does not. I know for sure it is dried out butyl tape as I have removed some. I have never seen a Irwin with 5200 in the joint but that does...

Re: Lifejacket Type Code Labels Go Away (BoatUS article)

"People who are carrying 50 year old vests probably are only relying on them to meet the rules. As opposed to carrying them for any other reason."

You mean other reasons like saving your life?...

Re: Lifejacket Type Code Labels Go Away (BoatUS article)

capta you kid about the Kapok vests but you would be surprised at how many of these I see during surveys. I would say 1 out of every 5-6 boats I look at have at least one Kapok vest aboard. It amazes...

re: Hull deck reassurance

I am planing on doing this to my Irwin 40 but will be taking a different approach. I plan to remove the toe rail and hull deck fasteners. Then lift the deck enough in sections to clean out the dried...

Re: Advice From Young Punks

"Do you know how freakin' hard it is to nail one of those cute suckers under sail????"

About as hard as it is to reach an agreement about the Salty Dawg Rally in an online forum? ;)

Re: Rallies Gone Wrong

Yes a drogue could help keep you headed down wind but to think you could steer like this I think is a mistake. Waiting for things to die down is a option I guess but they will not get that calm. The...

Re: Rallies Gone Wrong

I watched the video and really looked at it. I do not think it is a practical solution. It was done in flat calm conditions, they just about admit it does not work under sail and the lines rigged...

Re: Water damage teak bulkhead

The only problem with that is some surveyors (like me lol) will see this as a red light that there may be other problems like sagging floors, rot, and of course partial flooding. But if it is just...

Re: Prep boat's INTERIOR for possible knockdown

Interesting thread and some good comments. As someone who has been upside down in a 40 foot boat at sea I will add a few thoughts. First the boat rolls. Second it is being shaken at the same time....
