Re: Passage thru Panama Canal

Heh. Was talking to a fellow that wanted to save a little times over hassling through the locks. He paid something like $5000 to have his boat trucked from Corpus Christi to San Diego. He shrugged it...

Re: Production Boats and the Limits

They're quite hardy, and certainly discourage overloading, which is easy to do on a cat. I'm not a fan of the forward cockpit, though, and don't really see the need for two heads.

Fountaine Pajot...

Re: 30k Sailing Kitty, whatís your next move?

See, that's where different tastes come in. For me, that's a reasonably priced compromise boat (I'd like something with more tankage: water, fuel, holding, but this could be lived with) but it comes...

If you read all that, you're a braver soul than I. There was a lot of skimming on my end...

Re: Liveaboard in SF Bay?

I've been digging into the area a lot and for someone that's not trying to do this in the absolute cheapest way possible, San Leandro Marina looks like a pretty possible option as long as you don't...

Re: Potential move To Southern CA

There's something like 1500 slips on Shelter Island, and another 750 or so slips and balls onshore nearby, and the situation is pretty similar at Harbor Island a mile and a half further into the bay....

Re: Where should i spend my summer?

Nope, not free. Well, not 100% sure about the Soo locks, those are Corps of Engineers locks, but Welland Canal around Niagara Falls has two locks that cost money, and the St Lawrence has 13 or 14....

Re: Looking for premium coastal cruiser 39 LOA or less

Re: Boat Loan

I was reading OP's position not as "avoiding costs and fees" but rather as "Gee, I'd like to be able to buy a place to live near the water for tens of thousands of dollars instead of hundreds of...

Re: Liveaborders that never leave the slip? I don't get it. Help!

The whole concept of "credits" almost instantly means "too complicated" to my mind.. :)

I think 80% of the effect could be be had by simply tracking which boats can move under their own power, and...

Re: Personal Security Aboard

When carrying cash is used as "reasonably suspicion" for drug involvement to justify seizure of the cash, and there's ongoing reports of local police intimidation of cruisers in both Florida and...

Re: Boat Loan

Yeah, but the house money doesn't come back out until you sell, if then. Most of the friends I've got that bought houses in 2005-2008 are *still* under water, even if they're perfectly able to make...

Re: Boat Loan

BoatUS says boat loan interest gets a deduction just like mortgage interest, so long as the boat in question has a head, galley, and berths. And the Sales/Use tax paid counts as a deduction as well. ...

Re: Liveaborders that never leave the slip? I don't get it. Help!

Heh. Shorelines move. Considering the amount of stuff that's less than 10 feet over mean high tide in southern Florida, and what may happen to sea levels before those mortgages are up... There might...

Re: Personal Security Aboard

Maybe not for the criminals. Law enforcement looking to chase away those anchoring out for being unsightly vagabonds that don't move along fast enough to suit landowners? Having a shiny boat, a clean...

Re: Diving right into a Liveaboard

Re: Production Boats and the Limits

The swept spreaders mean you end up with the shrouds sloping sternward to the deck instead of being in line with the mast, and you end up not needing a backstay. Which means you can use a roach and...

Re: Budget Cruising/Bluewater Cruising

Heh. There's LOTS of boats out there that will last a few months for virtually nothing. And by "virtually nothing", I'm talking about 25' O'Days for about $2000-4000, WITH trailers. Look on...
