Re: Standard Horizon MD100 neither speed or depth working right.

I have the same problem with my MD150. Reading the same depth range as you describe. I haven't tried this at the boat yet, but my research suggests your unit is likely in simulation mode and can...

Re: As long as its fun

I just finished "As Long as it is Fun". I was really interested to find out the "rest of the story". What happened after Bull Canyon? Their travels with Talesein didn't disappoint.

Great read!

Re: Rallies Gone Wrong

Our L&S drive is a type 40 for about 15k pounds and a semi-balanced rudder. The pilots top speed is about 12 knots so far. I haven't tried to push beyond that yet, because I find steering fun at...

Re: Rallies Gone Wrong

Certainly step 1 would be to have a second drive unit. That is actually not uncommon for short-handed ocean racers. Step 2 would be just extra insurance carrying a second autopilot computer. ...

Re: Rallies Gone Wrong

Jon,

I'm seriously late to party here, but to set the record straight regarding the autopilot crossing the Gulf. It turned out not to be an internal fuse, but the bushings in the motor that...

Re: Best U.S. city for sailing, living aboard, working

We've lived aboard in Seattle and San Diego and now have our boat in Galveston Bay.

Living aboard and general living in San Diego is great, but the sailing is actually quite boring. You have a...

Re: The economics of sailing around the world

I voted the 100k-199k cuz I'm not aware of a seaworthy boat much under $100k that is fast enough to suit my interests, but that's just me. Different priorities... If you are going to the trouble of...

Re: Where can I anchor with 7' draft in the Keys?

Edit to the above...

I just did the route from No Name Harbor to Marathon and realized that is a bit far for one day (100nm). Are there any deep anchorages between No Name and Marathon I could...

Where can I anchor with 7' draft in the Keys?

Our J/120 will be dropped off in Palm Beach next week and then we'll be spending a week with a few friends making our way to Key West before sailing across the Gulf to Corpus Christi. Our boat is...

Re: $175K to ship your "yacht"

By coincidence our J/120 was just loaded on a ship in Gibraltar this morning, bound for Palm Beach. We used SevenStar, which is somewhat similar to Dockwise in that you can ship a sailboat stick up,...

Re: Sat Phone - Rent or Buy and which one

I bought all our gear one year ago. My memory is that iSatphone is cheaper up front, but more expensive in the long run because download speeds are slower and the result is that airtime charges are...

Re: Sat Phone - Rent or Buy and which one

We used an Iridium 9555 and an Optimizer data compression/wifi router last summer when crossing the Atlantic. It worked fantastic. We used it daily to download weather files and send/receive...

Re: Performance Cruisers and Racer/Cruisers

Here is a nice blog post from Morgan's Cloud that explains in gory detail why I'm happy our 40 footer has the interior of a 35 footer.

Re: Performance Cruisers and Racer/Cruisers

I looked at the Salona 38 at the Dusseldorf Boat Show earlier this year and it was easily the stand out boat for the show for me. Nice exterior lines, well thought out interior, really one of the...

Re: Performance Cruisers and Racer/Cruisers

It's curious all the focus on the J/122 when you can get a J/120 for half the price and give up??? A little bit of speed and newness, I think.

The J/120 used to seem like an expensive boat...

Re: Performance Cruisers and Racer/Cruisers

Marty, pretty sure Paul bought an Outbound 44 or 46. Hardly a slow slug of a boat. That's about as performance oriented of an offshore cruiser as you can get in that size range.

Re: Performance Cruisers and Racer/Cruisers

I don't want to pick on the J122 because I like the boat and you are right about the aft seat. It is probably removable like with the J109. Best of both worlds. The garage space is still not my...

Re: Performance Cruisers and Racer/Cruisers

True the J122 is a great boat. There are two things I don't like about it for cruising though, besides the price. One is the open transom. It looks cool, but you give up storage and a place to sit...

Re: Performance Cruisers and Racer/Cruisers

Definitely one of the fastest performance cruisers you can get in that range is the J/120. Cheaper than a new(er) J/109 and comparable price to the B36.7, but you get 4 more feet and a rating in the...

Re: Skilled helmsman steering downwind in 30-40 knots...

Howdy!

I have trouble keeping up around here. I go away for a few days and a nice little thread develops. I'm really enjoying the discussion.

In this case, I think most of you have discovered...

A followup video to the leaving Porto video

A few weeks ago we tried to sail from Porto to Gibraltar and ended up turning around after a few hours.

Last week we were able to get all the way to Gibraltar, but the first day was still rather...

Re: New England Ropes Synthetic lifelines?!?!

The NER WR2 is just double-braided Dyneema, which seems like an excellent choice for lifelines. You get the strength of Dyneema and additional chafe/sun protection by having the Dyneema cover. The...
