Re: Best way to get cushions

My wife and I spent yesterday's snow day here on Long Island making new cushions for my Tartan 27. The PO lost or threw out the old ones, so I cut foam to fit. Got the foam from a buddy who had foam...

Re: Mooring Question

I am issued a paper certificate and mooring number. The number is painted on the mooring ball, a sticker to my hull. If the harbor master finds the numbers don't match, you get a call for...

Re: Mooring Question

Given all the regulations these days, I'm surprised there isn't a weight requirement for the mooring. On Long Island, the town has strict requirements and you must have your mooring inspected and...

Re: Why do skippers yell?

I enjoy racing my old Tartan 27, usually with my kids as crew. We are a highly competitive family, each of my three children is a national and/international caliber fencer. My one daughter is in...

Re: Caternary & Chain...

I can't find the reference right now, but Rod Stephens of S&S is on record discouraging the use of a chain rode. If I recall, he believed chain stresses fittings and does not add to holding...

Re: Life Raft Anyone?

I needed a life raft to enter the Around Long Island Regatta. I rented it, then found out that shipping it back to Florida would be very expensive, so I kept it.

So, now I carry it. It does give...

Re: FrankenBebi

Glad to hear there is a pulse!

I wish I could help test, but I'll be on the hard in a few weeks.

Ordering an Owl was on my winter list, so count me in after the Beta Testing.

"Put the...

Re: How Far Do You Heel...?

Nice dream

I'll donate to the cause. Anyone who recognizes the many uses of beer gets my support.

Re: How Far Do You Heel...?

Just want to point out how lucky we all are. We all have whatever level of experience, interest, academic background to opine on various topics. But we get to read and interact with a truly...

Re: anyone familiar with west marine mast boot tape

I've used it for years and like it. I put a large hose clamp around the top and bottom, just like a regular boot, for extra hold. Never had a leak.

Re: Talk to me about whisker poles!

In this all too complicated world, it is very comforting to have a man of the stature of Mr. Perry advocating the most simple solution.

Go for it.

Re: Talk to me about whisker poles!

Thanks.

My Philippino friends have described many species and uses. And, boy does it grow fast.

Since then the local town board has declared bamboo an invasive species and we have removed it....

Re: Talk to me about whisker poles!

Four or five years ago, I lost my pole overboard, don't ask me how.

I went home, cut down some bamboo in my backward, fashioned a hook for the inboard end, an aluminum L for the outboard end...

Re: What do you have on your cabin sole?

I just put down some Plasteak fake teak and holly. Like it so far, but I'm accessorizing in the mold of Smackdaddy.

I like IPAs. I've found some in cans - Sea Hag out of Boston, Pork Slop, also...

Re: Look at that!!!!! The Greek are crazy..or Brave

Ok, as a proud Greek, sailor and psychologist...crazy it is! I love it. I wear around my neck a 2100 year old Greek coin with Tyche on one side (luck) and Astarte standing on a galley, tiller in...

Re: That can't be good..... right?

I agree with Paul. Over drill to get some more information.

I would over drill the size anyway so I could fill it with thickened epoxy and make a new hole. It will be stronger and water tight.

Re: Best small boat for cruising the Bahamas?

I'm pretty sure the 1960 design date is before MORC rule. I have the original paperwork listing it's CCA rating.

My point was the boat sails well without use of the board, better with it.

Re: Best small boat for cruising the Bahamas?

The T 27 centerboard has a pivot pin and uses a line on a pulley to raise and lower. It weighs about 115 pounds. I've jammed it a couple of times when I've run aground in rocks/pebbles. A screw...

Re: Best small boat for cruising the Bahamas?

Alert. Biased response.

I own a 1966 Tartan 27. Three foot two inch draft with board up. Very stable, easy motion in a seaway, can handle almost anything you will encounter. Sail great even...

Re: Decommissioning through hulls?

I was given advice that is a blend of the above. Grind/bevel the hole. Duct tape the outside. Mix up some Fiber Hair and fill from inside. Cover inside and out with fiberglass cloth. Makes a...

Re: Inflatable tender for 30' sailboat

Check out Sea Eagle. Good quality, significantly cheaper than name brands. Have had 8.5 foot for almost 10 years and it is in great shape.

Re: make a gale sail

I've done this. I used a Gale Sail on my Tartan 27 and loved it. When I bought my C&C it came with an unused storm jib and storm tri. I sent the jib to ATN and they added the sleeve. Very nice. ...
