Re: Making a living as a liveaboard

Has anyone run into issues with working remotely on their boat in a foreign country? I've run into tax rules about working being done in a specific country by a foreigner or for a foreign company. Or...

Re: 24 or 27 ft Catamaran with cabin (afforable) exist?

Maybe a Warram Tiki? This listing is so old I doubt it's still available but it says it was listed for $9k in good shape: Scott's Boat Pages: Wharram Tiki 21 For Sale in Colorado...

Cruising South America?

Does anyone have any experience with cruising South America, other than along the north coast? I just bought Jimmy Cornell's World Voyage Planner. Under it's influence, I'm wondering whether the 2-3...

Re: What would you get?? newer boat

I bought a 1998 boat with teak decks. The first owner's maintenance was limited to scrubbing and maybe a little oxalic acid or teak oil. There are no bungs which means no fasteners through the deck....

Re: What would you get?? newer boat

The last few years of Moody's are all deck saloons and aft cockpits. The center cockpits are so nicely laid out that I'd definitely agree with the earlier poster and go for the 42CC. There's a 2001...

Re: AIS alarm

I know this is a joke but you can flip the colors on a macbook. In Preferences under Accessibility, there's an "Invert Colors" option.

RedScreen (http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/33578/redscreen)...

Re: The future of the sailing world. Why are there so few young people cruising??

Depending on the jurisdiction, all you have to do is be in a area that's need for expanding an airport or running a new highway. They might choose to pay you for it but often they don't have to or...

Re: The future of the sailing world. Why are there so few young people cruising??

I expect the assumption, I'm just surprised that people so often voice it. I'm actually surprised more people don't think the former owners are my parents. Maybe I'll have to start explaining that my...

Re: The future of the sailing world. Why are there so few young people cruising??

Not yet. I wouldn't have the HR if I didn't intend to move aboard but it'll be 2-3 years. Canada in the winter is not my idea of a nice place to live on a boat. She's currently under cover on the...

Re: The future of the sailing world. Why are there so few young people cruising??

Perhaps some of these attitudes are a bit of a deterrent when young 'uns show up at the marina? Bad enough having people me that their children are older than me but now you're going to assume I...

Re: Help choosing a new MFD and Radar needed

Maine Sail, how are the Lowrance and Garmin products for adding to existing SeaTalk1 set ups? As much as I'd love to toss everything and start fresh, the money's probably better spent on new sails.

Re: Help choosing a new MFD and Radar needed

If you're headed for NFLD but don't quite make it, I'd recommend the Brad D'Or lakes in Cape Breton. But I did grow up near there so I'm pretty biased. Georgian Bay is pretty nice sailing though...

Re: Help choosing a new MFD and Radar needed

I can't believe I missed this, I'm in pretty much the same situation:
- ST60+ Instruments with repeater at nav station
- ST6000+ Autohelm with type 1 course computer and separate compass
- Small...

Re: Beating to windward

Even in benign coastal cruising, there are times pointing a decent ability to point can be really nice. On a charter cat I spent a ton of time slowly tacking through a passage wide enough to sail...

Kinda depressed that it looks like there may be even fewer sailboats this year :( And...

Re: BVI anchorages

We did in a 40' cat. There was another cat in Lee Bay that night too. Decent snorkling and a good jumping off point for Anegada. I don't recall whether there was much wind but I recall it being a...

Re: My Escape Plan - Insights Wanted

The purchase budget on a Moody 376 seems tight. I tried to get one that I felt would cost $100k after purchase and basic refit (not including all the outfitting I felt I needed) but it wasn't going...

Re: Review of my season on Georgian Bay

The sandbar near the fuel dock should be taken care of by the dredging, it was coming off of the breakwater at the entrance to that section. We were just told to stick to the middle and we'll be...

Re: 16'-18' Catamaran help

Sailing Anarchy would be a good place for this, sailnet tends to be more monoslugs and cruising cats. I've got a monoslug along with a beach cat now, I enjoy it but it's a very different kind of...

Re: Review of my season on Georgian Bay

We anchored near the main campground at Beausoleil and took the dinghy into the little bay to see what the depth would be like. Hard to tell how much water is between all the weeds. Even if there's...

As a new sailor out of Penetang (since mid-August), I found your posts useful. It's tough to figure out where we should head and how long to expect it to take, so your experiences are definitely...

Re: A Middle of the Road Cruiser.

Do you have a particular size and budget in mind?

If you're interested in a CS 36, you'll find a lot of them to choose from. If you're considering selling it again in a few years, that might not...

Re: girls and heels

Start her on a Hobie Cat. Worked for me, I don't get edgy til at least 30 degrees of heel. Of course, we go faster with the flying hull just skimming the water.

Joking aside, there's something to...

When you say your wife has a love of speed, do you mean like an adrenaline junkie or that a sailboat just seems so slow that she'll find it dull? My time on powerboats always left me most bored while...
