I found that Simple Green, which is a powerful grease-cutter, does the best job in removing residuals in just about any fabric. You may not like the soap smell, but it will be gone in the next wash....

The Hudson (all the way up to Troy, NY), Jersey Shore, CT, and the lower Delaware River have marinas and may be an option for you. The Chesapeake is nice (hot in summer) but can be pricey.
