Re: Martec 2 Blade Prop vs. 3 blade

I have 25 year experience with Martec folderws on my last 2 boats. Some comments.

The wear Bubblehead mentioned is common. Slop in the blades is the indication. Martec will recondition the prop...

Re: FWC kit for Atomic 4, a good idea?

I have a friend that did the conversion many years ago (he has since sold the boat). He did have to do an acid flush (using Rydlyme) of the cooling passages to remove any scale. The system worked...

Re: Canvas Costs

I have to agree. That's why I was VERY pleasantly surprised by the quote from Sailors Choice of $300 for a complete redo of my current one or $900 for a new one on the old frame. When I told him I...

Re: Battery Charging question

While I am not clear on how your OFF-DC-BOTH switch works, I would be concerned that since you have been running the engine with the switch in OFF, there's a chance you have fried the diodes in the...

Re: Bilge pump cutoff delay? Narrow bilge

I have one of those. I don't believe there is any delay before it shuts off. There are two small circles on the front of the box which is the location of the two sensors (capacitance I think). The...

Re: Thoughts about J37c or similar

I think the J37C is a good choice for what you want to do. A nice mix of performance and cruising comforts. I wouldn't rule out the J34C and J35C even though the PHRF numbers are higher. They are...

Re: Easy way to add temperature alarm?

You can install the temperature switch pretty much anywhere in the coolant loop. A piping tee and a hose barb or two would do it. Just note that the tee must be grounded to complete the circuit. ...

Re: New main sail

I guess I am not a bean counter either. Not only will I buy new sails for my old boat, I buy new tires for my old car.

Re: Yanmar 2QM15 Cooling Maintenance

Many like Rydlyme.

Re: Funding retirement boat

Agree! My solution to that issue was to sell the two-family home I owned for 30+ years and buy a townhouse in a community where the grass is cut, bushes are trimmed, and snow is plowed and shoveled...

Re: Boat registration NY/NJ

Whatever you do, keep records of any taxes paid so if you move the boat, you don't have to pay them again.

Re: Stop cable

As I suggested in my first post, try holding the cable with Vicegrips. That should allow you to apply enough torque to the handle to unscrew it.

Re: Winterizing Questions?

A couple of comments/additions/personal preferences:

1. I remove all the cushions and store in my basement. They get shampooed and Scotchguarded each spring before being returned to the boat.

Re: Inflatable Boat Airfloor Replacement with Plywood

My Achilles is a wood floor type. I would guess plywood is 1/2 inch. It's in four pieces which makes handling and storage easier. In addition to channels to make the pieces move together, there...

Re: Help me plan my cruise North!

Yes, Block Island is a special place. Been there many times over the last 30 years and hope to go back many more. Two of my favorite things to do there:

1. Take the dinghy into "Zodiac Beach"...

Re: Best outboard motor for a small inflatable?

I have a 2-stroke Yamaha 2hp on my 7'6" Achilles. It also is only good for 3 people. I find the engine a good match to the boat and love the light weight (about 22 lbs). If you can find a good one...

Re: Zippered Pocket on Foot of Main Sail??

My new-to-me Cal 33 came with a Dutchman System. Really love it. When I replaced my main last year, I had the system put on the new sail. Basically all you need is a new or modified topping lift...

Re: Mooring Line

I agree with paulk. It's not tensile strength that's important in selecting the size.

Most pennants fail due to chafe. A larger pennant is less prone to chafe. Get the largest that will fit...

Re: New Prop for Catalina 30

Sounds small. IIRC, the prop on the Universal 5411 I had on my previous boat was a 14D 12P Martec folder. Pushed the Cal 9.2 to almost 6 knots. But the Cat 30 was designed initially for the Atomic...

Re: Safe paint removal?

There are a few strippers sold by the marine paint companies that will not harm gelcoat, but they are pricey. I've used Citristrip which is available at Home Depot and many hardware stores and it...

Re: old yanmar 12HP water pump additional inlet and outlet lines

Its common on larger powerboats to have the ability to use the engine pumps as emergency bilge pumps. Perhaps the PO picked up on that and connected his engine raw water pump up that way.

Re: What to know about a raw water cooled Universal

With regard to the pump, just look for leakage out the weep hole between the two seals. If its not leaking you are fine. Universal replaced the original pump with a new one a number of years ago. ...

Re: Universal Oil filter

Since it's fresh water cooled, it is most likely a 5416. The 5411 was raw water cooled. Check the dipstick as it will have the Kubota engine number. The 5411 was Z-500. The filter I used for the...
