Re: Key Lime Sailing Club

Tagging along. I've eyed this place also. Catalina 22 and a cottage, $140/day for both I think? Not bad!

Re: Daysailer vs cat 22

Yes, we generally do it on the trailer. I tie a line to the end of the forestay, which my wife takes the other end of and walks to the front of the truck. I stand in the cockpit and lift the mast...

Re: Daysailer vs cat 22

My wife and I have been trailer-sailing a C22 for a year now, and we couldn't be happier. We were avid tent-campers to start with, and we bought the C22 with the intention of using it as a small...

knockdown vs. capsize vs. broach

Can someone help me understand the differences between these three terms? Even the mighty Wikipedia has left me scratching my head a little. Thank you!!

Re: tacking angles

Hey Sandy - In one of the tracks shown, I was flying a class jib, in the other a 150. No, I've never been sure if I had the cars set right. I gather you move them forward for light air, aft for...

Re: tacking angles

GeorgeB, I can't thank you enough. With every post, you are teaching me something. Like you, I just want to sail well.

With regard to the forestay: I have always had a deuce of a time getting the...

Re: tacking angles

Thanks guys, I'm getting some great info here. I'll definitely use the compass and a little math to get my "real" tacking angles next time, both port and starboard.

Now speaking of tension, may I...

Re: tacking angles

Yes, I don't think there is any current to speak of in either of the lakes pictured. And leeway is something I understand, of course, but I have no way of knowing how much progress it is costing me....

tacking angles

I always thought that, since I can sail approximately 45 degrees off the wind, that I should be able to tack 90 degrees. But in practice, I'm not getting anywhere near that. My angles look closer to...

Re: Three Years From Cruising

Man. That's what I've been saying a lot lately. Better late than never, but if I'd been a young(er) guy, this would have been my LIFE.

measuring a headsail

I have a jib which came with my boat that "should" fit, but doesn't. It's too long in the luff. I think I must be measuring things wrong.

Is a headsail's luff measured from head grommet to tack...

Re: Wind and Sails

I think what the book might be is referring to is "sailing by the lee", which can cause an accidental gybe.

It's when, on a run, the wind is on the same side of the boat as the boom/mainsail. The...

The reportage here sounds just like when it's a firearm story: minimum BS content of 75%. Clueless reporters spewing sensational, headline-grabbing soundbites for the clueless audience to be thrilled...

"Class jib", "working jib"

Which one refers to a "100%" jib? Or are these terms synonymous?

And while I'm at it, I often see the term "125 jib" thrown around. Isn't this a misnomer? Shouldn't that be "125 Genoa"?

Thanks...

Re: Vibram "FiveFingers" shoes

Bingo. This is a big attraction for me as well, jumping out at the boat ramp or wherever, onto sharp or slippery things.

For those of you who have them (glad to hear some of you do!) do you know...

Re: Sailboat off Marco Island tries to ride out Thursday's storm - Wink News

I don't get it. Sea Tow came and got them "after the boat ran out of gas" ... while they were at anchor?

I'm very new to sailing. People use an engine while at anchor??

Solar battery charger showing 19 volts?

I know nothing about this charger, it came with my boat. It's old and small and raggedy looking and falling apart at the seams (literally). I didn't expect it to work, and hesitated to hook it up to...
