Re: Tips for installing radar reflector to backstay?

I wouldn't ever attach to to the backstay. It will constantly be swinging from side to side in the wind and cause work hardening...

Re: Voyaging on $500 per month

New haul, good weather and route planning will get you a lot farther than cahones. I was headed that way this summer happily cruising on a budget of $400.00 per month. We made it as far as...

Re: Removing Bottom Paint

I'm very confused by this thread. I use one coat of ablative every three years COLD water. I never clean it, when the boat moves all growth falls off. at the end of three years it is still going...

Sheet to tiller for extended voyaging

Has anyone here used sheet to tiller for extended voyaging? I have what some may consider to be a traditional cutter and just can't bring myself to ruin her lines with a self stewing vane. At some...

Re: Small Live-Aboards?

I've been very happily living aboard my 22' cutter for 4 years with my dog. This year I added a mate and it shrunk a bit but we have no intentions of going larger. Its all about mindset. If you...

Re: Increasing displacement with bilge freshwater storage?

I typically carry about 10 cases of wine on my boat. I can't say that it makes her sail better but she sure does anchor better ;)

Re: Lifespan of Fiberglass Boats

What I haven't seen mentioned here is mast and deck. Old masts will eventually need replacing at a cost more than likely more than the price of a 1980's boat. Decks will also need work as the old...

Re: Greatest fear?

My biggest fear both on or off the water is Debt. Nothing will enslave a man faster or longer than buying something he can't afford through time payments. To put it short what I fear more than...

Re: Increasing displacement with bilge freshwater storage?

I can't remember the numbers but I think they say every pound you take out of the rig adds 10 to the ballast so to speck. New rope rigging might be a easy way to start this project, as would well...

Re: Never been sailing, want to sail the world.

Re: Lifelines, lowers, or not?

Re: Whats your best bit of kit??

I'm guessing this doesn't count but my Ukulele. It is the most used item on the boat not only by me and the sailorette but every time a guest comes by. Everybody seem to gravitate towards it and an...

Re: One Ship Stupid

I assume it was braided line, if so the proper way to coil it so it won't get tangled is the figure 8. You would be surprised how many boat owners do it wrong.

Re: One Ship Stupid

Heres a new one, I have seen this in every marina I have ever been in. A guy comes down and spends a few days waxing his boat to a perfect shine. The next week he comes back to wash his shiny boat...
