Re: Kingston to Toronto

In the summer, when most people sail on this lake, you can wait forever for a NE breeze. I would take anything without West component, the chances are the conditions will change anyway in a few...

Lake Ontario to Georgian Bay

Having cruised most of Lake Ontario in the last two seasons, I made the decision to relocate to Georgian Bay. I am planning to make the trip from St Catharines to Penetanguishene sometime in May,...

Canadian davits

One of the major items on my list for next year is davits. I have been looking at Kato and I like what they have, however with the current CAD exchange rate I am wondering if it would make sense to...

Re: Mast on or Mast off in winter

This is what happened to my neighbor last year, and I am now a firm believer in mast off storage!

Re: Shaft log raw water supply

Same setup on my Beneteau. I've always thought this is needed to ensure good water flow through cutlass bearing, which is installed in the log as opposed to strut.

Re: How much wind to knock down a Tartan 30

Last summer I was caught in sudden microburst on the lake, running full main and 140 genoa. Wind went from 10kt to 30 sustained gusting to 35. The boat immediately rounded up and hove-to with about...

Re: US Approves Ferry Service to Cuba

You can purchase a week long all inclusive vacation from Canada for not much more than that.

Re: slip vs. mooring

10 years...I thought we have it bad here. Can you try the slip for a season and then go back to the mooring if you find it is not worth the extra cost?

Re: Westerbeke 30B three oil leak

Thanks for the tips, much appreciated. How about removing the tranny? I guess the main problem is access to the bolts, or is there more to that? Also is there any tricks for moving the shaft back...

Re: Westerbeke 30B three oil leak

Thanks for the suggestion. I cleaned everything with solvent and a few days later had a good look with mirror and lights. The pan was clean and the oil was found on the bottom of flywheel housing....

Westerbeke 30B three oil leak

Last year towards the end of the season I started noticing some oil drops in the bilge. Mirror inspection showed possible leak around the rear end of the oil pan, between the oil pan and back plate. ...

Re: Lifespan of a Diesel Engine

Mercedes-Benz museum in Germany has 1988 200D with 1.9 million km on the original diesel. Used as a taxi in Portugal. Assuming 50 km/h average, which is probably generous for a taxi, this is 38000...

Re: Winterizing a boat

I did my own shrink wrapping this season. Not very difficult but time consuming, took me about a day and a half. Next year with experience and mast down should be faster. We haven't had any serious...

Re: Antifouling Paint for the Great Lakes

Interesting, thanks. It appears VC offshore is suitable for fresh water as well. Is there any downside to using VC offshore instead of VC17 for Lake Ontario? Also, how long was your trip south?...

Re: Antifouling Paint for the Great Lakes

Micron is ablative, and it is just wearing down like it is supposed to.
VC17 is what most people use around here and I may go that route as well if starting over. However I don't think is it...

Re: Antifouling Paint for the Great Lakes

I have been researching exactly the same question. My impression is there is not a whole lot of difference in fresh water unless you are racing. My boat came with Micron CSC and when it is hauled in...

Re: Head dumps directly into sea?

Get a mean cat?

Back on topic. While I understand (and follow) the best practice of using your tank and not dumping while in harbor, what about those boats that stay in beautiful Caribbean...

Re: Buying a US Sailboat.

OP's location says Port Dalhousie hence the recommendation of Youngstown which is by the way on Lake Ontario not Erie.

You can probably unload in Oswego or Sodus if you want to save the land...

Re: Buying a US Sailboat.

The closest US location to you is probably Youngstown yacht club. Check if they can help you unload/commission the boat. From there it is a short sail/motor to Port Dalhousie. Then all you need to do...

Re: what do you do for a living?

I tried doing exactly that last summer for a few weeks while cruising Lake Ontario. I am in a similar line of work. Overall it was fine but working underway single handed is not something I...

Re: Flashing oil light

I would check the oil sensor wire. Mine became loose after some extended motoring last summer, with exact same symptoms.

Beneteau 361 stern tube/cutlass bearing

I am in the process of replacing my cutlass bearing and it appears the bearing is installed in a fiberglass sleeve inside the stern tube. The sleeve was damaged together with the bearing I am looking...
