Re: No Navigation Lights

I don't think the lack of an anchor light is a huge deal on a lake. It's not as safe as it could be, but it isn't exactly a huge problem. On a lake, you might have all sorts of unlit hazards...

Re: Tethering singlehanded

Thanks for all of the thoughtful responses. I am especially considering how jackline layout may affect things.

But overall, I think a some of you guys are having a really different sailing...

Tethering singlehanded

I just got back from a multiday singlehanded trip where I made an effort to stay tethered basically all the time. My main tether point was in the cockpit, and I had jacklines leading to the bow on...

Re: Boatyard transducer installation mistake

Here was the original quote:

Install two transducers in old locations (Owner supplied)
Hours 4.50
Rate $107.00/hr
Labor $481.50
Materials $158.90
Total $640.40 (plus tax and environmental...

Re: Who do I find out my boats pay-Load?

Technical nit-pick: It has to be lighter than air, not lighter than water, to further increase your buoyancy, because you are replacing an air volume with something non-air. Everything inside of the...

Re: Boatyard transducer installation mistake

Yeah, my temporary solution was the transducer glued with silicone to the inside of the hull at an appropriate place. I had upgraded from an ancient early 1970s neon tube-based Raytheon system to a...

Re: 12 volt AGM batts. worth it ?

I'm currently using two regular marine 6V GC2 215 AH deep cycle batteries in series. Given local stock in marine batteries, that was simply the most cost-efficient tradeoff, and the largest AH that...

Re: Boatyard transducer installation mistake

I called the fill-in project manager today, and explained. He seemed a little hazy on the details, since he apparently delegated it to someone else (and he wasn't sure specifically who it had been)....

Cabin-top mainsheet traveler upgrade

I'd like to update my existing pin-track traveler to something a little easier to adjust. I find it very difficult to adjust under any real sailing conditions, as the car pretty much doesn't move...

Re: Yet another Reverse Polarity Question

That is what I intended to communicate, but I communicated it poorly. Thanks for clarifying this important point. When it comes to electrics, I'm trained as an engineer, not an electrician.

What...

Unhappy Boatyard transducer installation mistake

I'd like advice and wisdom from those better at boatyards than I am...

As part of the work I'm doing at the yard, I'm having the boatyard install two replacement transducer through-hulls. I...

Re: Our very first boat!

Congrats!

One minor observation: unless you have some particularly special solar panel, they pretty much shouldn't ever get partial shade. The cells that are shaded will completely ruin the...

Re: First Time as Skipper: Lessons Learned

I like your thoughtful approach. There's lots of different ways to approach sailing, from serious and conservative, to risk-taker BFSer; they're all valid, but I'm the reflective type as well. I...

Re: Yet another Reverse Polarity Question

Polarity warning indicates a problem with shore power, not the boat wiring. Sure, boat wiring problems could cause it too, but that's not why it's a thing. If your boat wiring is wrong, there's no...

Re: Did I make a mistake in reporting a claim to BoatUS?

Nope, that's pretty much it.

But the scariest part doesn't really show up well: the hull-to-deck joint damage.

The main thing that makes it expensive even though there's no hole is that...

Re: Buying neglected boat

I can't tell about the boat, but I'll offer some advice based on my experience, based on day-sailing:

Don't buy a boat that has anything wrong with it, especially as your first. "Wrong" means...

Update: Settlement, everything seems OK

Like people in this thread mention, BoatUS is actually pretty reasonable to talk to. Several times during this claim I've basically just called BoatUS and basically said 'let me talk to someone' and...

Re: SF Bay - how long do you get out of Pettit Trinidad SR?

I had my bottom painted with one coat of that paint, in blue (I recall that this matters.) 34 months ago. I've never had the bottom cleaned. When I hauled last week, there was a thin coating of...

Re: Did I make a mistake in reporting a claim to BoatUS?

I appreciate the advice, even though it seems a little harsh. However, I think there's another perspective.

All of the costs in question are primarily "labor." That means I'm paying an hourly...

Re: Did I make a mistake in reporting a claim to BoatUS?

It is hard for me to fully express how upsetting to me the lapse of seamanship that caused the accident is. I don't know how it could be more personally embarrassing. It wasn't a case of my lack of...

Exclamation Unexpected BoatUS telephone call: The adjuster urges me to submit a claim

There's been a really interesting development here; after canceling the claim over the weekend, I considered the matter closed.

But BoatUS didn't; the adjuster originally assigned to my claim...

Question Mystery panel: TELCOR boat speed

Does anyone have any idea what this thing is, or what it does? See attached image.

Re: Did I make a mistake in reporting a claim to BoatUS?

So after getting advice here, and elsewhere, and speaking with an adjuster, I decided to cancel the claim with BoatUS, because the claim basically takes me to a place that isn't where I want to be. ...
