Re: Wood selection

Thanks for the suggestion. We are planning on 1/2" ply underlay with 1/4" hardwood planks on top (sole has a lot of support) all coated with penetrating epoxy. It should be well protected, but I...

Re: Wood selection

Awesome info. We are redoing the interior of a boat and going with cherry furniture, but kind of stuck on what to use for the sole. We want something light colored for that euro two tone look, but...

Re: We have fallen for the Cheoy Lee 40 Offshore

I looked at that boat on Yachtworld...she's beautiful. Having not been aboard, I couldn't tell if the hull shape or engine space would allow you to drop that 2nd berth lower. Seems like an option...

Re: Interesting Sailboats

Wow...just noticed that there are 17 clutches in the cockpit, but the deck organizer are only three on each side. Figuring then six from the mast, two for jib sheets, one for furling line and maybe...

Re: Interesting Sailboats

How much friction do those stainless line guides that go over the cabin top to the coaming add to the sail handling?

Re: solent stay in dyneerma or ? diameters?

If Evans says he does it, it is good enough for me.

Re: solent stay in dyneerma or ? diameters?

Bronze hanks seem to be fine as long as they don't have rough edges. Evans and Beth use bronze hanks on their dyneema stay and haven't had any issues. http://www.bethandevans.com/

Re: solent stay in dyneerma or ? diameters?

I've often wondered if dyneema creep was a big deal with a solent stay. This is an application where the stay is only rigged/tensioned for a short period of time, and typically with a mechanical...

Re: Propane off rail instead of locker?

What about the solenoid valve hanging out in the weather? We have a dedicated propane locker for two 6lb tanks, but it's angle and size takes up a ton of storage space. I have thought about hanging...

Re: OpenCPN on Window 8

ok, tried installing today, but am not getting any location information still.

I ran the 12kb app and it opened a command box which said "press any key to close". I then ran Opencpn and setup a...

Re: OpenCPN on Window 8

Thanks for this.... I have been trying to find a solution to the GPS issue on my Dell Latitude. I'll let you know how it works when I get the chance to run it.

Re: Self steering dilemma

We have a Raymarine below deck with CPT wheel pilot as back-up. The below deck uses much more power than the CPT so we switch back and forth as needed.

Only reason I want a windvane is the...

Re: Best sander for bottom sanding?

We had to strip off the layers of VC17 to put a salt water compatible paint on last year. The epoxy base of the VC makes it extremely difficult to sand with the Port Cable, but it helps if you can...

Re: Interesting Sailboats

Quiz answer? Guessing an XC 45 or 50, but the port lights don't seem to be right. The styling on the bulkhead (padded white squares) is their design right?

Re: Keel Bolts

How are you planning on drilling 12" down straight? Seems like that would be pretty hard to do while it is still mounted in the boat.

Re: make a gale sail

Yup... just a soft shackle the appropriate size to clear the luff tape on this sail. I'm a little worried using metal hanks on the synthetic stay. With the pressure that would be applied by the...

Re: make a gale sail

We ended up installing a Solent Stay for this very reason. Trying to slide the Gale Sail up during anything more than 20 knots seemed impossible. Now, we have the storm jib hanked, bagged, and...

Re: Keel J bolt replacement in lead keel

Do you remember the estimated cost for either Mars or Broomfield? Neither of them have gotten back to me yet.

Thanks,

Re: Keel J bolt replacement in lead keel

I wondered the same thing on the one really bad bolt. The yard wanted to sister in another bolt by this one, but for resale purposes, I don't want to screw around.
