Re: why is my oil so clean?

You guys all did something right in a past life - every diesel I've ever had, including new on the pallet, turned the oil black after a few hours of running.

Re: Steel vs Fiberglass

Smurph - get a Copy of The Gougeons on Boat Construction - it has a section on strip planking. They used it to make a fairly rigid base to laminate veneer over and ended up with an extremely stiff...

Re: Leveling on the Hard

If the boat is in a cradle with screw jacks for the pads you can level it yourself - it just takes some time.

Slightly loosen the side or end you want lower then tighten up the other side or end,...

Re: Steel vs Fiberglass

All the talk about bad building practices, shortcuts, unskilled labour etc. back in the day is all moot even if it WAS true - those boats are, for the most part, still sailing so how bad can they be?...

Re: Polishing is not for an old man!

Get a rolling scaffold so you can sit while doing it - makes a huge difference.

And stop being such a pu$$y ;) I'm nearly 64 and I'm currently doing a complete bottom job on my "new" 31' -...

Re: Steel vs Fiberglass

A couple of points - Can you weld and do you have the equipment for it? I regard that as an essential skill for anyone owning a steel boat. Second is - are you actually going offshore? A steelers...

Re: Best metal sailboat information

I'm getting a SERIOUS blast of Deja Vu.

Wasn't all this said Ad Nauseum prior to Brent's vacation?

Re: Low buck projects- Let's see 'em!

Maybe they're immune there due to all the orange groves. :D

It sure works here - almost as good as bats.

Re: Low buck projects- Let's see 'em!

Best repellant I've ever found is Citronella - candles or oil in lamps.

Re: Low buck projects- Let's see 'em!

S & S coupling.

A curiously apropos name for a bit of gear for use on a sailboat. :D

Re: Looking at a 1977 Morgan 30

Re: a 2 1/2 year old survey (or older) - virtually worthless. The boat could have been sunk and raised in that time, the sails could have blown out, the engine could have been cooked etc. etc.

A...

Re: Best way to make fenders easy to use...

Beaners or just snap hooks - set them to hang just kissing the water then you can shorten them if you moor at a taller dock.

Re: Sailboat cost spread sheet

I can see the need for it in a partnership but I can think of little that would be more terrifying and/or depressing than a detailed spread sheet of my sailboat costs. :D

Re: Rub Rail Falling Off

It's a LOT of money - that stuff is $$$ per foot. Stick it in with some poly adhesive like 4200 or even 5200 if you use it sparingly.

Re: Bent bow rail

Jims asked the right question - is it creased? If so a good shop can cut out the bad section and weld in a new piece invisibly - I had it done on a stern pulpit and even I couldn't find where it was...

Re: Resin stanchions

I gotta say - I've never even HEARD of cast resin stanchion bases.

I sure wouldn't want them.

Re: Any info on Reinell 26 footer?

Plus the gear you'll have on board. Looks like you should figure on 3 tons towing weight.
