Re: What Boat And Why

I don't think I would ever "live" on a boat, but I could see myself doing a fair amount of cruising. If we are talking extended distances, a Gunboat 66 would be my dream boat. If we are talking...

Re: Sucks trying to nail down a boat.

From the list you have, I am going to guess you have not sailed on a lot of those boats. If that is correct, the first thing you might want to do is to get rides on boats that you have on your list....

Re: Where do you want to retire in Caribbean or Central or South America?

I am already living where I want to retire. Don't plan to leave... ever. Once I stop breathing, they can scatter my ashes in the backyard under the bird feeder.

Re: Cheap Classic Plastic smokes the fleet in 2013 Down the Bay Race

That is part of it. I think part of it may also be that you folks have have not lost as much of your free time to the altars of globalization. Sailing takes space, money, time, and desire. Americans...

Re: Cheap Classic Plastic smokes the fleet in 2013 Down the Bay Race

I agree with some of what you say here, but the idea that the J24 has a soft PHRF rating is just not true. The same guys racing their a**es off in regional one design events are also sailing weds...

Re: Cheap Classic Plastic smokes the fleet in 2013 Down the Bay Race

The Flying Tiger 10 is pretty much now what the Hobie 33 was then. It is very fast and very affordable, and they just don't sell a ton of them. The cost of campaigning a boat in the 35ft range is...

Re: Cheap Classic Plastic smokes the fleet in 2013 Down the Bay Race

They spend that much on the trophies down there huh? If I were dictator for a day, the trophy would be a bottle of wine and the rules of the club would dictate that it must be immediately shared with...

Re: Cheap Classic Plastic smokes the fleet in 2013 Down the Bay Race

Don't take the entries in one race and try to extrapolate that to all racing in the Chessy or US. There are a couple of J111s down there on the bay, and there was even a TP52 in this race. DTB is a...

Re: Cheap Classic Plastic smokes the fleet in 2013 Down the Bay Race

126 seems like a brutal rating for that boat. Did the owner run over the handicappers dog or something?

We race Portsmouth here. All ratings systems suck, you can't take it too seriously. It gives...

Re: Cheap Classic Plastic smokes the fleet in 2013 Down the Bay Race

Yep. With our kids now grown and independent, we suddenly have a bit more money in our pockets. We could definitely afford upgrading to a J70 or J88, but I just can't justify it based on how we use...

Re: Cheap Classic Plastic smokes the fleet in 2013 Down the Bay Race

A new J24 today will cost you 60k when all is said and done. A J/22 new today will cost you 50k when all is said and done. A new J/70 will cost you 50k when all is said and done. As far as I can...

Re: Cheap Classic Plastic smokes the fleet in 2013 Down the Bay Race

Horses for courses. Hobie 33s go downwind very fast, that is what they were designed to do. They still do that 30 years later. If you want to go downhill really fast on a budget, a Hobie 33 or Olson...

Re: Pointing Problem

As c_witch pointed out, sometimes the problem is under the boat, not above it. TropicCat has the right idea, make sure the mast is centered first. Since the placement of stanchions and other hardware...

Re: Shocker Wife likes the J boat

The J70 looks like a hoot, but I would make sure that three of you get a test ride before putting down the 50k to get into one. A mistake their could be costly, and a test ride should be free.

Re: Painting Hull

Well I did not get within 10 feet, but from 50 yards away it looks great. I was over on b dock and spotted her wearing her new colors in her slip. I was hoping to repaint Anthem this spring, but...

Re: Cunningham Design Suggestions?

Very cool. Let us know how it turns out. If you can take some photos of the sails before or after the race and post them here, we might be able to offer some more ideas. Photos from the center and...

Re: "Help" Boat shopping on the Great Lakes?

The catalina 27 and albin vega are your best bets of the boats you listed. An Albin Vega just circumnavigated the Americas, and there have been Catalina 27s which have circumnavigated the globe. Both...

I loved my Macbook air with it's solid state drive, but my eyes are not so great and needing a bigger screen, I traded with my wife for her HP. When it dies though, I will be getting a larger Air. I...

Re: Computer Expert Help

You are best off buying a cheap new machine. You can probably find a closeout for right around $300 and it will have all new parts, not just a new hd, and will also likely have more memory, and a...

Re: Cunningham Design Suggestions?

I understand the motivation to save your good sails, however sailing with 30 year old sails is going to undermine your learning. 70 - 80% of racing is boatspeed. Boat speed comes from boat prep...

In 30 years I never have, but I won't presume that means I never will.
