Re: What are the pros/cons of the Max Prop

I was lucky enough to have the previous owner spring for my MaxProp. Yes, more complex than standard, but it seems like a very solid, relatively simple piece of gear. Maintenance consists of...

Re: Inheriting two sailing vessels

Not inappropriate, Djoralem. Your situation is unusual for this forum, and sometimes unusual, and unreal, stories are posted by those just looking to watch the Sailnetters scramble. I think James'...

Re: Yanmar 2 gm filters

My boat has a European version 3GM30F and the only difference I am aware of is the water pump--I use a different impeller. Primary (on engine) fuel filter and oil filter were standard.

Re: What's the best was to seal my stanchion bases?

I'm not sure I totally understand your setup, but yeah, it sounds like you should be worrying less about the bases and more about whatever goes through the deck--that's where you want your seal. Do...

Re: Pearson Vanguard 33 reviews?

I've been following this great discussion, hopefully soaking up some knowledge, and I just can't see where Jeff is ever condescending. Knowledgeable, yes. Experienced, yes. Willing to post lengthy,...

Re: Beneteau 343 2006 Salt water intake

Boatpoker, do you know if Beneteau has always used brass thruhulls? The engine and shaft thruhulls on my 2000 331 seem solid and fine. Then again, the boat is on the hard, so this would be the time...

Re: Yanmar 1GM10 runaway?

Yeah, that decompression lever just pushes one of the valves (the exhaust I guess) down a little bit. I can't see trying that while the valve is pounding up and down.

Re: Prepping to re-bed stanchions.

A cordless Dremel with a little cutter bit (#115) to clear out a few millimeters of core all around inside each hole before filling with thickened epoxy has worked well for me. And if it's wet in...

Re: An indelicate question

I know what you're saying...That hole and hose look mighty small. However, even a hand pump Jabsco pulls and pushes with quite a bit of pressure and forces improbable output down the line. Good to...

Perfect example of the dangers of one of those non Coast Guard certified LED anchor lights! :)

Re: engine hours

One thing to keep in mind with a high hours engine is that sometimes it is an indicator of a boat used for charter--which can mean more wear and tear on everything, including the engine.

Re: Yanmar 3gm30f oil level gear box

That's what I've read. And screwing back in vs. not is a crucial distinction.

Re: Chapman's 67th Edition

I got the new one for Christmas last year. I haven't done a compare with an older version, so I can't speak to that. I can say that it is a painfully heavy book! Handy for balancing your hull trim...

Amazing progress Chuck! I think I'd still be procrastinating on that nasty work, but you're well on your way.

Re: Beneteau Loves Silicone?

Geez, Mark. I don't like the silicone used on my Beneteau so I need to buy a different boat? Calm down--I wasn't attacking you or your boat. I'm quite fond of my Beneteau, but I will find problems...

Re: Beneteau Loves Silicone?

Paulo, as Alex suspected, I definitely was not using "silicone" in any kind of generic way to mean "bedding goop." Polyurethanes, polysulfides, butyl are fine, silicone not. Silicone has those...

OK, I read the whole ad and it made my morning. I love a good rant. I'd like to meet the guy, but I'm afraid I may have some of his disqualifications.

Re: Beneteau Loves Silicone?

Ah, so you've got silicone on your Jeanneau, then Minne?

One good thing on the Bene is that the stanchions and some of the hardware, such as the winches, were installed over solid fiberglas, so a...

Beneteau Loves Silicone?

I've been surprised and pissed to find that Beneteau used silicone to bed pretty much everything on my 13 year old boat. First I found silicone under the winches and just figured they were the work...
