Re: New, Scared, Excited, and in love with the the Idea

Go for it! Seattle will probably have the best selection of pilothouse models available, which is highly recommended to get the most out of your boat in AK.

Re: Fisheries Supply in Seattle, WA

Good point. My MO is to check their stock online before I head in. Fortunately, their inventory counts are usually pretty accurate so if I don't see it on the floor, it's invariably down below.

Re: Fisheries Supply in Seattle, WA

I live relatively close to Fisheries and do a lot of business with them. On they whole, they're a very good chandlery with a huge variety of goods but they do have a few weak spots.

It's good to...

Med,

Take a look at Sure Marine Service. Great shop here in Ballard and they've got good prices:

Re: Deep in my chain locker something nasty lurked

If your galvanized chain sits in a wet locker for a long period of time, it'll rust regardless of its quality or where it's made. I'd focus on improving the drainage of the locker and keeping water...

Re: A GOOD multimeter (that won't break the bank)

Sorry to hear about your problems with the Mastech. I wonder if they've upgraded the build a bit since 2006 since I'm not seeing any of the issues you've experienced.

Re: A GOOD multimeter (that won't break the bank)

Med,
I like this one. It does DC as well as AC via the clamp, includes decent probes, and has been reliable. The inrush peak sample and hold function is very handy for troubleshooting motors. FWIW....

Re: Need a good digital tachometer.

Med,
If you've got an external regulator on your alternator, check to see if it has a tach output.

Re: 12v Voltage Regulator?

Agree that you don't need to worry about your electronics. However, if your alternator wiring is undersized then I'd fix that.

Re: I hate boats...

Med, look at the diagram in your post #282. The loop that rises above the waterline that's between your raw water intake and your mixing elbow prevents spontaneous flow when you open the seacock. If...

Re: I hate boats...

Here's the reasoning behind my statement. The engine raw water inlet is, by design and necessity, always below the waterline. The exhaust outlet is above the waterline except in the exceptional (but...

Re: I hate boats...

Med,

Let's give your insurance company's engine surveyor the benefit of the doubt for a minute. You posited at one point that the engine wouldn't have run for you in WA if it'd had all that water...

Re: Which banks should I wire my alternators to?

Only if you remove the load suddenly while it's running. Disconnecting it entirely is almost exactly the same as a fully charged battery from the alternator's perspective.

Re: A cheap source of Zincs worldwide

FWIW, zincs aren't that big. I can easily carry a few years' worth tucked away on the boat.

Re: Which banks should I wire my alternators to?

Does the genset have its own starter battery? If so, wire the genset's alternator to the genset's starter battery.

Re: Alternative to Raymarine autopilot drive?

Have you checked that your rudder bearings are in good condition? If there's significant friction, it could greatly accelerate the wear on your drive, regardless of brand.

FWIW, I've got a Type 2...

Re: Turn that frown upside down! Lets talk NEW engines!

Fair enough. Regarding horsepower, I've got 100 HP in a 20 ton boat but others of the same model have 75. FWIW, I think 75 would be fine. Just a data point for you...

Re: Radar - what to look for

I agree with your main priorities but I don't worry too much about power consumption because I use radar mostly under conditions where I also happen to be motoring. YMMV. That said, the Furuno solid...
