Re: Simple small boat jib down haul?

On my old 24' I wove it between the hanks to stop it flying loose in the breeze. Also, tie it to the last hank and not the head of the sail, it can cause the head of the sail to twist and jam up...

Re: Aft stay

Re: Mixing elbow

Whack some seafoam in the fuel, take her out for a good hour of running at the max continuous rating of the engine, as Mr Ape says.

Re: Re power choices for Sweden 36

Good boat, I had the pleasure of crewing on one a couple of years ago, including a Swiftsure.

Re: Father and son sailing

I see a couple of 170s out over the summer around here, they seem decent enough daysailors. My little-un has been out a few times, Sunday was fun. He has tried steering and grinding the winches. ...

New lifelines

Well after one of my old wire lines failed (note that it failed at a fitting, not in the wire itself which is pretty common I understand), I decided to replace them with synthetics.
The lower eye...

Re: Lifelines, lowers, or not?

I mostly singlehand, coastal/inshore in fairly protected waters, and daysailing I get the choice of going out in snorty weather or not. Anyway, I have made and fitted a new set of lifelines, uppers...

West Marine pulling out of Canada

Apparently they are closing all but their Toronto stores, like them or loathe them, you have to admit that for those living within reach of one, they are convenient.

Re: Which ones have ship wheel/helm and no tiller?

They will have engine controls in the cockpit. I would suggest that before you look for a small ocean going boat, you actually go and look at a boat, any boat, and try to get an idea of what one...

Re: Need help, rolling furling get stuck after unwinding 5 feet of sail

If you look at the top swivel, can you see the halyard wrapping around the forestay? If that's all looking OK (i.e. not wrapping), then you could have an over-wrap on the furling line inside the...

Re: New Father...Advice needed on sailing with kids

I read a while back, can't remember where, that the best sort was from a place that did hockey net, you could buy it by the yard and a fraction of "marine" netting but it held up well.

Re: Inspecting fire extinguishers

If they are powder ones, take them off the mount every 6 months, hold them upside down and give the bottom a sharp tap with a rubber mallet, ensures that the power isn't settling to form a block at...

Re: single-hand: best time raise/lower jib?

I always raised the main directly into wind (slugs get stuck otherwise), then turned off onto a very close haul on starboard tack. Tighten the port sheet up a bit (not too much) and hoist the jib. ...

Flew my symmetrical for the first time

Got fed up waiting for someone to come with me and lend a hand, so this evening I took the boat out and finally got the symmetrical spinnaker up. Not the smoothest hoist, still a few kinks to work...

Re: Help! 3GMD won't start.

Fuel system needs bleeding. Had the same thing, thought I had done a wonderful job, engine ran for a few minutes, coughed splutter, stop. No restart.
Bled it again (obviously did a better job),...

Re: Yanmar 1GM issues

The noise is likely diesel knock, it'll be worse if the timing is also out but mine does something similar if you try and accelerate too quickly, it's not exactly the world's most responsive engine...

Re: Sailboat that can be beached???

We used to launch a Mirror dinghy from the beach all the time, sails lowered, centreboard in the slot ready to push down, rudder raised. Push out to about mid-thigh depth (if that), push off and...

Regardless of the direction they state, the wind will always be coming directly from where you want to get to.

Could also be knocking caused by bad timing, if you don't have a shop manual for the engine, let me know and I can email you a link.

Re: One Motor mount or all ?

I'd probably replace them all while I was at it, the bulk of these jobs is usually labour costs and I can't imagine it is significantly more to change all four over one. You'll only have to do the...
