Re: Antifouling in the Caribbean

Umm... yes. If I can't use an illegal anti fouling paint here in the States, why should you be able to? The fact that you brought your boat in from somewhere else doesn't give you special...

Re: Antifouling in the Caribbean

If you have a shred of concern about the environment, you won't use the Sea Hawk tin-based paint, regardless of where the boat lives. That crap is even illegal in China, for God's sake, which should...

Re: Best place in California to sail and live on your boat?

Both bases have been converted to civilian use. Treasure Island still has it's marina and is a small boat sailing center. NAS Alameda is now home to tech companies, distilleries, craft breweries and...

Re: Ablative vs. Hard Paints....

The way I see it, you have a couple of options:

Determine what kind of paint you have. If it's ablative, pressure wash the dried slime off and launch (assuming you haven't blasted all the paint...

Re: Electrolysis When on a Mooring

This occurred within a few week span. Cause was a bare bilge pump wire in a damp bilge.

Re: Copper sheeting & CopperCoat anti-fouling

It is a common misconception that since the Navy is exempt from U.S. environmental regulations concerning anti fouling paint, that they use special paints that the rest of us cannot. The reality is...

Re: Bottom slime

Again, you seem to be missing the very point you went to such great lengths to make (albeit perhaps not intentionally)- the slime that fouls boat hulls is not the same as the slime that fish create...

Re: Bottom slime

Fish are not sailboats and the slime they produce is not marine fouling. Apples and oranges.

I'd venture to say that nobody reading this (certainly not the OP) is using foul release coatings,...

Re: Bottom slime

Almost, but not quite. The biocide leach rate is not reduced, it continues unabated as long as the hull is in the water until the biocide is depleted, regardless of how much growth is on the hull....

Re: Bottom slime

If you think sailing with a dirty bottom is somehow faster than sailing with a clean one, I've got a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.

As far as regular cleaning goes, doing it relatively...

Re: Any ideas on this Hooka type dive compressor system?

It can be an issue, I suppose. I don't actually install a lot of the single-piece ring anodes on sail drives, because they tend to last a long time but also because it requires pulling the prop and...

Re: new bottom cleaning kit

I've been cleaning boat bottoms for almost twenty years. Here's a basic tool kit:

3M Doodlebug pads and holders
Suction cup
3M wire brush w/scraper
6" scraper
5-in-1 tool
Flathead screwdriver...

Re: My First Cruiser: Pearson Triton

The Triton does not have a tabernacled mast. The spar simply sits in the step and is held there by rigging tension.

Buying a boat like this, sight unseen, is a big gamble, IMHO. Good luck. Hope it...

2.- Remove the cover plate.
3.- Remove the set-screws that secure each blade pivot pin.
4.- Drive out the pivot pins.
5.- Remove the blades.

Re: Replacing propellor in the water?

I can't tell you what paying a diver would cost you in your neck of the woods, but here in the Bay Area, prop R&R is $10/inch diameter. You'd probably be looking at $150-$170 or so.

Re: Pigtail Adapter: 30A to household 15a plug

I go the other way 'round. Every day I plug my 110-volt, 10.5 amp, 1.25 hp air compressor into 30 amp shorepower using a 16-gauge extension cord. Have done for almost 19 years. Never a problem.
