I would suggest using a small amount of starting fluid to determine if the problem is fuel or electrical in nature. That way you can narrow down the possible issues, and work on the right problem

hatch or hatch cover whatever it is called it has been hard to find. I am only a couple of hours from sailorman. so I might give that a try.
I have also considered having one made from plexiglass....

sounds like a reverse wiring on one of the 110 volt outlets. I would try the reverse polarity indicator in each of the outlets with the invertor or shore power
