The GPS's I have all give you a choice for the speed averaging time -- it's a menu item, maybe 3 - 4 options. So you can have "instantaneous" or "average" speed.

Check the manual for whatever...

I have an OI 36, with the same port design.

Those ports have always struck me as being weak for offshore use. If I were doing an ocean crossing, I might pull the windows and gaskets out, and bolt...

A suggestion:

Seal the hole in the deck (if you need to drill one for the coax cable) with a Blue Sea "Cable Clam".

They're not horribly expensive, and (at least on my boat) they don't leak. ...
