Re: Non active zinc suddenly VERY active.

1.- That anode does not need to be replaced.

2.- If that is all the depletion the anode shows after a year in your current marina, the marina is not "hot".

While I do not know why the zinc is...

Re: Non active zinc suddenly VERY active.

The anode pictured does not appear to be depleting particularly rapidly. It looks as it should after a year. If (in the past) that anode lasted for many years, it was likely not doing it's job. I...

Re: Take me with you on your next sailing adventure! Short notice OK!

Fairly sure we could find a more humble one though.

Re: Sunfish Bottom Paint

You might clarify whether or not you are looking for an anti fouling paint or not. I suspect what you have in mind is putting a topside paint on the bottom.

Re: Cargo License?

A slower, less convenient and less reliable method of shipping small loads? No offense, but I don't see this concept being a viable business model in a 1st World situation.

Re: Cut this waterlogged line & plastic bushing off the prop shaft, am I in trouble?

I've seen this many times. It's not a bushing. It is melted and hardened nylon line.

Re: Is it possible to afford the sailing lifestyle while working an ocean-type job?

There are currently well over 100 hull cleaners plying their trade in the greater Bay Area. Of course, there are now also about 20,000 boats berthed here as well.

Re: Is it possible to afford the sailing lifestyle while working an ocean-type job?

While hull cleaning is an easy gig to get into, it is not an easy gig with which to support oneself, at least not at first. It takes a long time to develop a clientele. Most boat owners who want a...

Re: Happiness is a Clean Bottom

It's not even "paint". If memory serves, he simply mixed some copper powder into epoxy and coated his hull with it.

Re: Happiness is a Clean Bottom

That doesn't even make sense. The color of the anti fouling paint has no effect on how much sunlight the hull receives.

It is true however, that it is somewhat harder to see fouling growth on...

Re: Vivid bottom Paint

Not to mention that by burnishing, you are removing anti fouling and therefore hastening the time you will need to haul and repaint.

Re: Vivid bottom Paint

Having cleaned many Vivid bottoms in the water, I can tell you that you can't touch the stuff without it "pluming" off the hull in very visible clouds. I assure you it is amongst the softest paints...

Re: Bottom Paint ?

Trinidad works fine in freshwater but if you are in low-fouling conditions (which tends to be the case with freshwater) you can certainly get away with something less expensive. But properly...

Re: Bottom Paint ?

16 days maximum dry time before launch. Longer than that and you've killed the paint.

Re: Bottom Paint ?

I only recommend two anti fouling paints, and Bottom Shield ain't one of 'em. That said, it may be adequate for the fouling conditions in your neck of the woods.

I suppose you could, but I...

Re: Bottom Paint ?

A wive's tale. Cayenne pepper does not retard fouling growth.

For the most part, the Navy uses what you use. Standard, off-the-shelf, copper-based anti fouling paints.

Re: vibration from prop shaft

You could hire a dive service to do an inspection. Just a look-see and maybe some pix shouldn't be expensive.
