Leveling on the Hard

I know that winter haulout is now 6 months away for most, but as I was getting the boat ready to splash this Spring, I was reminded how the boat is never perfectly level on the hard. This means that...

Re: Pinhole Leak in Bilge Wall (see pic)

It just occurred to me that we re-bedded a new stud-post to hold a zinc opposite that area. Could it have breached through when screwing that in?

[Edit] - No, now that I give it more thought,...

Pinhole Leak in Bilge Wall (see pic)

So, Tiger Lily has been in the water for about a week, and I was ready to deliver her down the bay to our house ... and the marina staff alerted me to this ... a pinhole leak in the upper forward...

Re: Bottom Paint ?

I'm a little late to this coversation. I'm in the Upper Chesapeake and both West Marine BottomShield (semi hard paint) and West Marine CPP (ablative) do a decent job here. I use BottomSheild on our...

Re: How to get free internet on your boats.

If you have Verizon, sailing in coastal waters within range, you can use your iPhone's hotspot feature at no additional cost to support up to 10 devices. If you are not getting at least 3G coverage...

Re: Best I-Phone App

I use the following to varying degrees on the boat:
- Weather Channel (has live and "future" radar)
- Garmin BlueChart Mobile (for when I'm not at the helm)
- WindAlert
- Words with Friends

Re: Before and After Photos - Show Us!

I'm hoping to have a lot more before and after pics of Tiger Lily this Spring. Great expectations and high hopes!

Mounting GoPro for Halyard

I'd like to hoist my GoPro camera up my spinnaker halyard. I see a lot of videos that say this is how they created their footage, but I can't find any images or descriptions of how they...

Re: Percentage self-taught sailors?

I'd say I'm 80% self taught. I took two day-long sailing classes at a local marina on 19-foot(?) Rainbows(?) before buying a 35-footer. After that, I've gleaned a lot from any experienced sailor that...

Re: Mooring laws ??

Gary is absolutely right about Maryland. Other than blocking channels or private property, there are really no rules about placing or maintaining mooring balls. In New England, by comparison, you...

Re: Getting frozen shackle off mooring ...

Thanks. I was using a crowbar and an, albeit small, pipe wrench. No luck. I think I'll hit it with PB Blaster and let it sit a day ... but I'll be armed with a hacksaw when I go out to give it a try.

Getting frozen shackle off mooring ...

Can I just hacksaw through a galvanized mooring shackle. Mine is frozen and I can't get my pennant off. This is the upper shackle on top of the ball, above the top swivel.

Re: Fouling this season - How was it for you?

I use West Marine's mid-grade CCP ... it did fine on the painted areas. Just my prop and thru-holes didn't fair well. I've used Petit Zinc Barrier coat on the prop.

Fouling this season - How was it for you?

From my boats on the upper Chesapeake (Annapolis area), one our Pearson 35 and the other a small Sea Ray powerboat, it seemed to me that the barnacles this season were worse than last year -...

Re: 50 Best Cities for Boating

Virginia Beach is not a sailing community. I grew up there. Not many places to keep your boat, low bridges, shallow creeks. I would love to sail down the bay and sail at the mouth of the Chesapeake...

Re: Maiden Voyage Trip Report - A 23-hour tour!

Sometimes this time of year, when the water is cooler, the "smoke" may be steam/condensation from the two temperatures combining - hot wet exhaust and cold ambient water.

Re: What the heck is this?

I think that the sea-kindliness rating for this craft would be a negative number. Talk about sea sickness!

Re: Annapolis boat show

Middletons has a good raw bar. The restaurant's other fare is mediocre in my opinion.

Another good restaurant that I neglected to mention earlier is Harry Brownes on State Circle.

Does anyone speak French? Is this an actual vessel or a scene from All Is Lost?

Re: Annapolis boat show

Some better restaurants (less of a tourist trap) as you walk up Main St. To the Capitol building. Osteria, Joss, Level, Cafe Normandie.

Re: When Do You Get Off?

This is a good thread. As someone that sails with children, I think that I am more likely to get off the boat than go forward in a chancy situation.

From the title, I thought this thread was...

Re: Bilge cleaner - homemade or cheap substitute

Some of the things mentioned in this thread might be great bilge cleaners, but are not good for the environment and should not be pumped overboard. I don't think that phosphorous based detergents...
