Assuming that the wire from the ammeter is one of the two wires on that large fuse, I would want to know where the OTHER wire goes. I would also want to know what is on the other side of the fuse.

It is likely that the wire going TO the ammeter comes directly from the alternator. The wire coming FROM the ammeter likely goes to the starter solenoid.

If this is the case, your best bet would...

It could also be burned-out contacts on the solenoid itself... but it does sound like an engine ground/battery connections issue to me.

Anything intermittent like that is an electrical connection going south.

Check the main engine ground first, it might look good, but pull hard on it, and remove it and clean it.

Check the fuse...
