Re: Auto vs manual inflate lifejackets

I would think you are much more likely to fall overboard and hit your head than you are to be dragged under by the rigging of a sinking boat. Further more if the boat I was on was in bad enough...

I am looking to purchase a new main sail for my 26 ft trailer sailor on a budget. I found a place online that will sell me a new darcon main sail with 3 reefing points for the low price of $747 plus...

Re: Do I really need to spend big bucks on a weather station

my sole reason for wanting it is to know wind speed. I don't really worry about the forecast. If its iffy I don't leave the inner harbor

Do I really need to spend big bucks on a weather station

I am a fair weather sailor on the great lakes. I also don't have tons of cash to spend on my boat and accessories. As a matter of fact with my slip going up 7% this year my boat fund is low on cash...

is it ok to look as long as you dont touch

wondering how many of you search craigslist in your area every day. Not because you want to get rid of your current boat. Just because you want to see whats out there. Almost feels like cheating...

Re: Do you think I'm going to blow myself up

my understanding of the vent on a portable container is to allow air to enter the tank when pulling fuel out of it. If I run the motor with the vent closed after a few minuets the engine stalls due...

Re: Do you think I'm going to blow myself up

yes the boat is fitted with an 8 HP outboard. Adding a vent sounds like a good idea. I was thinking with a 12 gallon I would keep 6 in it so there is plenty of expansion room. since I started...

Do you think I'm going to blow myself up

Originally I was keeping my 3 gallon portable gas tank in the cockpit under foot where everyone else keeps it. When I was going to be out for a while I would close the vent and make sure the cap was...

Re: Trailer Sailer centerboard !!&%$^$@%$^???

I assume the reason why you want to do it in the water is because the rope is broken with the centerboard in the down position. It will be a real problem getting it back on the trailer with it down....

How do you stretch your season in the northeast

I am a fair weather sailor on lake Erie. I don't mind putting on a jacket but finding someone to come with me is challenging because of the early sunset and lack of heat. Looking for some...

Re: Do I need new sails

Here are a few pictures from the other day (about 10 mph wind). I dont think I'm in danger of them having a blow out but I do need new sails. After a little research I should be able to get another...

Re: Do I need new sails

I finally got a chance to get some air on my sails. Not much more than 10mph but thats better than nothing. I also got a chance to inspect my sails. no rot, feels very strong and crisp.

Re: Do I need new sails

sorry no update. We have been getting hit by storms one after another since the original post. I was hoping to go out tonight after work but they are calling for water spouts on Lake Erie. I don't...

Re: Do I need new sails

I haven't been out since the original post so the attached pictures are the best I have. The sails are from the manufacturer of the boat and the boat was a very affordable kit boat.

Do I need new sails

Yesterday I took 2 guys, who claim to know how to sail, out for an evening of sailing. They were here from out of town and I know nothing about them or their background but they talked a good game. ...

Re: Outboards: sailing with the motor down.

in light air I get it out of the water as soon as possible. in heavy wind I leave it down for 2 reasons. I might need a little push in a hurry and it helps to add a little drag sometimes. I'm not...

Re: Permanent vs. portable fuel tank

I keep a 6 gallon can to top off the 3 gallon so its not about getting stranded. The beach furthest away from my dock, that I would motor to when there is no wind, comes dangerously close to...

Currently I use a 3 gallon portable fuel tank for my 8hp outboard on my 26 foot fiberglass sloop. That is big enough for me to travel a good couple of miles but I have run out of gas motoring on a...

Re: What do you pay for Slip Fees??

Buffalo NY on the western end of lake Erie. $1200 per season for a 30' dock with water. Electric is $100 more and the season is 5 months long. That works out to $240 per month. More than I would...

Re: Lake sailors?

If I could somehow move Lake Erie south I would never have any need for ocean sailing. Anyone can afford to live within 10 or 20 minuets away from the marina here in Buffalo. I've spent months out...
