The best way to test the battery is first it needs to be charged up, and then check if it meets the reasonable load. Again recharge the battery and verify if it holds the charge.

Yes it will work but you will not get accurate reading from your meter because it is not directly connected into the batteries. You should remove the batteries for good readings because when you do...
