I have the same for my main and when they are opened up they use a band brake and pawls so they can be raised when the brake is on check your braking inside the base to see if its dirty they don't...

haven't tried any of the "new" generation anchors but have had bruce and Danforth and my cq hold far better in variety of bottoms
only thing i don't bite on is rock but for that I use my hereshoff

I've hear some using epoxy clear as a base for the varnish and to stabilize the expansion of the wood but epoxy needs something on top to protect from uv
perhaps a 2part LPU clearcoat
