Re: Steel vs Fiberglass

" Elsewhere, the foam should do the same."

Ok, but my fishermen buddies have to rip out the foam every two or three years. I'm not taking issue with your comment. I just don't understand it. I'm...

Steve:
Right. You said it, I'm no Einstein. But I'm learning so much as each day goes along I have to think my best work is ahead of me. If I didn't think like that I'd quit. Beethoven produced his...

Re: Steel vs Fiberglass

I'm just back from the yard . Fun ****. I had a long chat with Jim Betts about repairing boats. Jim has built a ot of alu boats and he is very good at it but he thinks they can be the hardest to...

Re: Steel vs Fiberglass

I like to work with alu. I can shape it for the styling I want. The weight does not control the hull design parameters. I've done some great boats in aluminum....

Re: Steel vs Fiberglass

Harmonic:
Yeah, you are right, I did say that incorrectly. ( I corrected myself) I never meant to say that a steel boat had to be ugly because it was steel. I have designed several steel boats and...

Re: Steel vs Fiberglass

I wonder if without electrical power you really could do a repair in a remote area easier with steel than grp. Grp doesn't require any electrical power to do a quick repair. It may not be pretty but...

Re: Steel vs Fiberglass

Denda: We are lucky in that Jim Betts is an expert metal worker and comfortable working with titanium. I think Jim has built as many alu boats as he has composite.

Smacks:
Watching those guys work I wouldn't dare pick up any tool. BS can be "hands on". I'll be "brain on".

Re: Steel vs Fiberglass

Fallard:
The price difference between the CF cutter and an all e glass cutter is about $50,000. The boats are being built time and materials so we don't have an exact cost yet per boat. Buying for...

Re: Steel vs Fiberglass

John:
I am a bit ahead of you on that. Right now we are building four, semi-traditional 43' cutters at Jim Betts yard in Anacortes,WA and they will be all carbon fiber and epoxy. They are all for...

Re: Steel vs Fiberglass

Engineer:
You are pretty much right on but getting a little wrapped up in the math of it. With your one design built in two different materials keel position would not change. Overall LCG should be...

Smackers: Yes that's me. Born with a wooden sock in my mouth.

I could use the hat right now. My buddies old dog just died. But no rush on returning it. I this uncomfortable feeling there will be...

Smackers:
You just need to work with the numbers long enough that it eventually becomes a seat of the pants thing, i.e. something you feel beyond just numbers.
I have been struggling with this...

Re: Steel vs Fiberglass

Great graph Smackers. I have been doing computer stability studies since the Valiant 40. Most cruising boats fall within the 122 to 128 degree LPS range. One of my racing boats, STEALTh CHICKEN, was...

Re: Steel vs Fiberglass

The luxury tax hit my business hard. I had to lay off my staff and work alone for a few years. Maybe that was good. I could focus on a few, choice custom projects and do all the work myself. One...

White: We launched FRANCIS LEE last year and I have been racing on it now for two years. It is a strip planked cedar hull with a composite deck. It's a rock solid boat and very, very fast....

Re: Steel vs Fiberglass

I agree. I don't like the made up performance facts. But you have to consider that BS has most probably never sailed a truly good performing modern boat. He has a narrow range for comparison. I...

I don't really know that. It has been said but it't not the kind of thing I track. I hear from T-37 owners who are all over the world. They love their boats. That works for me. I have been...

Socks? You wear socks. Where I grew up only the "rich" kids had socks. I am not kidding. I had socks.

Re: Steel vs Fiberglass

I just want to talk about boats. If the theme is steel vs grp I have just about more grp boats cruising the world than any other designer. I can speak with some authority on that subject. I like...

Re: Steel vs Fiberglass

Holy Cow Furr: BS's attack on my family was a desperate attempt and bizarre to say the least considering BS has never met my family. BS has tried everything possible here to "un-do" what I have done...
