almost always, black soot/smoke is an air to fuel mix problem....filters, blockage in the air pathway, either intake or exhaust.

These are usually cheaper things to fix, before you get in to pumps...

you really should spring for a new unit. The mount does a lot of work and keeps things aligned correctly. Labor is the same for doing it both ways, but do it once and be done with it.

check the governor and lift pump filter (side of engine)....either can cause what you are experiencing. If you have changed the lift pump filter, then I would suspect the lift pump itself.
