Re: From the "what were they (the designers) thinking" category.

You have done great work to correct these problems, hats off to you, but I must correct...

These are not necessarily design flaws, the builders could be at fault.
My boat was designed with an...

Re: Sailing around the world in a small sailboat

Jeff, you are right in general terms, and this depends too much on particular designs, but having had the two types of boats, I stand to what I mentioned.

Re: Sailing around the world in a small sailboat

CCA boats are initially tender, but once heeled, they stay there and sail very efficiently as in a groove, rather than rolling back and forth with the uncomfortable motion associated with beamy...

Re: Westerbeke 30B motor clicking, high amp draw

Chuckles is right, the fuel pump makes a clicking noise as it is electric and self-bleeding. However, the clicking should only be heard when you turn on the ignition switch, and according to the OP,...

Re: Bottom Paint Removal - Scraping or Chemical?

In my opinion this is a good plan, specially if you plan to barrier coat (which should be done after soda blasting), as the hull will have the chance to dry out a bit.

Re: Bottom Paint Removal - Scraping or Chemical?

+ 1

Soda blasting prices varies with the area. Also not every marina will allow it. Where I am there is a new dust-less process that will do the same thing, will not harm the gel coat and no need...

Re: How can I tell if my diesel is bad?

RichH, I hear you. But.... bad fuel is bad from the beginning, it may not have anything to do with how old the fuel is.

I posted my reply not because of money. C'mon.

Polish that fuel for a...

Re: Westerbeke 30B motor clicking, high amp draw

There is a circuit breaker at the rear of the engine, the button is facing forward, on the starboard side of the engine right beside the fuel filter and solenoid. Did you check it? You could have a...

Re: How can I tell if my diesel is bad?

I did and they laughed at me!

I have been told by many mechanics and truck drivers that diesel fuel does not age, and if it is filtered properly there is no harm feeding it to the engine.

Re: Almost sank my boat... Prop Shaft - backup retainer?

Set screws are only good for one use as the get "blunt" - they should be replaced if they are backed out.

Re: Portlight dogs

Brass would be just as good.
Get easier to find threaded brass rods, cut to size, round one end for the butterfly nut and drill. Should work fine.

Re: What's the *second* best way to keep spiders off your boat?

After a long battle with roaches when they came aboard first in Bermuda and then Brazil (yes, they do fly to the boat!!), spiders are not an issue at all, and sometimes welcome, given the stuff they...

Re: Wilcox crittenden seacocks - missing drain screws

Thank you Hellosailor.

I am reopening this thread hoping that someone had better luck than I.

I am still looking to replace my corroded WC seacock drain plugs (the boat is on the hard).
I just spoke with Spartan, and...

Re: Incredible hull cleaner, dirt cheap and fast.

Auto paints are a different beast.
There are cautions everywhere not to polish/buff linear polyurethane (such as mine), as it will burn the protectant top film and eventually destroy the paint.

I seems that all the comments, analysis and failures stated so far are related to gel-coated boats.
Their website state that it can be used on painted fibreglass. My hull is painted, paint does not...

Re: Incredible hull cleaner, dirt cheap and fast.

Well... our boats are fiberglass, why would it not work?

Re: What's cradle worth

Cradles for a 34' boat cost from 500 right close to 2 grand depending on the design, shape, four post, six post, etc.
Moving it may cost just as much as they are are heavy and cumbersome to load....
