Re: As long as the boat is out of the water . . .

It will all depend on how blistered your hull is but I can promise you it won't dry out in a week. One of my boats that I did a bottom job on got sand blasted in the fall, sat all winter, was finally...

Re: As long as the boat is out of the water . . .

You will need the boat to sit for awhile after you've popped the blisters to be sure that hull dries out. Be sure to have someone hit the hull with a moisture meter before filling the blisters. If...

Re: Bottom Paint Removal - Scraping or Chemical?

I scraped, then used a razor blade, after that an orbital sander with 50 grit paper connected to a shop vac. It's slow going but leaves you with a clean surface to work with.
It was a 3 weekend job.

Re: Blistering

[QUOTE=oomfh;1952634]I stopped counting at 300 blisters on a previous 1981 Catalina 25. [QUOTE]

Once you find yourself in a situation like that you'd be better off to sand or soda blast the hull...

Re: Should I go?

Personally I'd go for it, 4'-6' aren't bad long as you don't get seasick, seeing how you solo. But don't listen to me, I'm crazy...
Stick to the Mass Bay side so if you decide to bag it, you can...

Re: 1981 - Catalina 30' or Sabre 30'?

That's the cool thing about having a stick built boat, you can renovate till your hearts content. I shortened up the starboard settee to extend the galley 30".

Re: 1981 - Catalina 30' or Sabre 30'?

Personally I'm partial to Sabre's for the obvious reasons but as Mr F has noted, be sure to check the compression post step. Also check the bulkheads for rot where the chainplates bolt up. Nice...

Re: Petite Top Side Paint

I'm no expert Gary but I understand any 2 part paint will flatten out if dew gets on it overnight during the curing process. If the boat isn't tented it becomes very difficult picking a weather...

Re: Petite Top Side Paint

Scrymshaw, I never got to the job last year. The prep work is just about complete & I will complete this part of the project very soon if it ever stops raining....

I spent 30 minutes talking to...

Re: gate valve won't close - 1977 Newport 28

Odds are the stem is broken & if so not only will it not fully close, it won't open.
Like Denise 030 mentioned, time to replace them with ball valve style seacock.

Re: Sailing By Way of Power Boating

I felt the operating portion would be as easy. Sailing is more demanding than stepping on to a boat & turning a set of keys but so much more peaceful.
I don't miss the drone of twin inboards or...

Re: Grey Water in No discharge areas

Most of the lakes in NH require a boat to have a greywater tank. They get pumped out just like the a head holding tank.

I believe Lake Champlain in VT also requires grey water holding tanks.

Re: Generator Question

As others have mentioned there is a kit you can purchase so the unit starts up without a huge surge but it may not be available for a carry on unit.
Although boaters refer to it as a soft start kit,...

I had 30 years of power boating experience & when I wanted to learn "how to sail", this is where I went.

Re: Just bought our first sailboat

I second this suggestion, take the basic keel boat course. This will give you guys a solid foundation to grow on & will take a lot of the guess work out of the equation so you have fun!

Re: SailNet On Line Petition(s)?

The response here doesn't surprise me.

This thread has had 373 views. What I see is 373 signatures on a petition being delivered to the clowns in Beaufort by one of the local boaters. Roll that...

Re: Plugged cockpit drain

You'd get a drain auger stuck then you would be disassembling it.

Flo617 suggested a shop vac, instead of vacuuming it out, reverse the hose & blow it out.
