Re: Dueling Charging Systems; Solar, Engine, Battery Charger

I hope you are not implying that you have more experience than MS. Or are you?

Re: Internet connection

Comcast/Xfinity has been installing free (for their customers) wifi hotspots all over the U.S., including Maine. Here is a service map. http://hotspots.wifi.xfinity.com/ Not sure if other...

Re: Raw water cooling - walk away?

I've been told that the reason manufacturers have gone to FWC is so they can use (cheaper) general purpose motors, rather than the purpose built RWC engines.

Re: Sailboat Insurance

Well, I ended up purchasing a policy from Seaworthy, through IMIS. Coverage much better than Progressive (which I expected), but at a lower price (which I didn't expect). And it was really nice to...

Re: Sailboat Insurance

Well, I received quotes back from IMIS (Seaworthy Yacht) and Boat US (National Liability and Fire Insurance). The premiums and coverage appear to be about the same. The only appreciable difference...

Where do you mount your chart plotter?

On my 28 foot tiller steered boat, I have my MFD mounted to a Ram mount which swivels out to the cockpit (and my VHF on a second mount). One advantage to this approach is that the MFD can be very...

Re: Sailboat Insurance

To be clear, the primary purpose of my posting is to identify the desirable features of a boat policy, particularly those features that are often missing in Progressive-type policies. The policy...

Re: Sailboat Insurance

That makes good sense. I submitted a couple online quote requests yesterday (to Boat US and a couple broker/agents). Will see where that leads. Thanks.

Re: Sailboat Insurance

I'm not sure what you mean. I suppose it would be nice to have an agent or broker that I could sit down with and have a chat, but I'm not sure that's worth paying for. (To me),

30 years of home...

There wasn't a specific person involved - all transactions were all online.

Re: Sailboat Insurance

Environmental Damage: The declarations page says this: "Liability coverage ($300K in my case) includes bodily injury, property damage, and fuel spill liability". Is that the same thing?

Re: Sailboat Insurance

I've been a long-time happy customer of USAA for my home and vehicles. So naturally, when I purchased my (28 foot, Puget Sound cruising) sailboat a few years ago, I went with them again. USAA farms...

Re: Boat Loan

A side comment on insurance - I also insured my boat through USAA, but the actual insurer was Progressive. And neither required a survey (though I did get one prior to purchase).

Re: Boat Loan

I think that USAA membership is restricted, but I don't think their rates are dramatically different than those available elsewhere. They're operating in the same general economy as the other banks,...

Boat Loan

There's been thousands of books written on personal finance, so not much chance that this obscure thread will add much, but I would offer these two observations:

*At reasonable interest rates and...

Re: Engine sound insulation

I never would have thought of that. I have a few dentist friends, so I'll see if I can get my hands on one. Thanks for the tip!

Re: Yanmar 2QM15 Cooling Maintenance

I too have a 2QM15. My annual maintenance schedule includes replacement of zincs, t-stat, and impeller. Cheap enough.

I also did a Rydlyme flush last year. Made a huge difference. Haven't...

Engine sound insulation

My boat has sound insulation (1 inch foam sheeting with foil facing) on the bulkheads immediately surrounding the engine (Yanmar 2QM15). Not sure if it's original or PO installed, but I suspect the...

Re: Boat Loan

My bank (USAA) offers "recreational" loans at rates as low as 4.25%, for amounts all the way up to and exceeding $100k, for terms up to 10 or even 20 years. And from experience, I know that...

What is the life span of a chart plotter???

20 years ago, I bought a desktop PC. 8088 processor, as I recall. Case and power supply was super strong (heavy gauge steel), really well built. I replaced the guts several times, up until the...

Long Term Storage

Thanks for that lead, Faster.

Another thing I could potentially do is buy a used trailer. Once on the trailer (via crane?) I could store it in a general storage facility, which would be much...

Long Term Storage

There is a moderate chance that my career will take me to Europe for 3 or 4 years (federal employee). If so, I'd like to transfer my 28 foot sailboat to dry storage, both to save money, and to...

Voltage drop?

You are right - my statement that no current would flow in a no load condition is a bit of a simplification, since the meter draws a minuscule amount. However, my point was merely that Iowa's useful...

Re: Voltage drop?

I'm pretty sure he was describing measurement under load. In fact, his methodology doesn't really serve any purpose if the circuit is not under load, since there would be no current flow.
