Re: Is Florida all its cracked up to be?

Hi, here's the real poop. I've lived in the Tampa area for the last 12 years. There is good sailing for about 9 mo. out of the year. In Jan-Feb it is way too cold and a little blustery. You do get...

Re: Visiting St. Petersburg end of February

I'm over on the east side of Tampa Bay a little south of downtown Tampa. I'm a member of the Tampa Sailing Squadron, Sailing squadrons are basically inexpensive yacht clubs, I keep my Cal 29 there....

Re: CAL 29 bilge locations

I have a 1974 Cal 29. It has a deep bilge just under the cabin step, roughly 2-3 ft. deep, basically starting where the batteries are and going forward about two feet where it steps up to the upper...

Re: Washing sails

I do the same thing but I put them in the driveway which I have rinsed off first. Back when I had a big house I would hang them from the top floor deck to dry.

Re: Gelcoat Mildew-I'm so sick of gelcoat mildew

Wash it off, then wipe it down with a weak vinegar solution 1/4 cup per gal of water. Don't rinse it off. That will kill all of the microscopic spores in the surface of the gel coat. It will smell...

Re: Florida is at it again

I've said it before the derelict boat is not an issue. There are laws in FL already to cover this, what doesn't exist is the money to provide for enforcement and removal. These people are already law...

Re: Florida is at it again

This law will do nothing to affect derelict boats. It will only affect the honest people who want to anchor for a night or two, they will be harassed at the rich landowners behest by the FWC. The...

Re: Is this mahogany, how to seal it?

A year ago I started using Helmsman Clear Gloss Spar Urethane on my grab rails, companionway boards, etc.. It goes on at full strength, don't need ten coats and only one final sand before the last...

Re: Engine to close to tilt up all the way

I had to make a two inch thick bearing plate - 2-3 inches larger than the plate on the mount - wood glued up with epoxy then epoxy coated to be able to tilt the new 4 cycle 9. I still have to turn...

Re: Squatters at dock!?

I think the real problem for your friend is that she gave him permission to dock. His not paying her or being unwilling to remove the boat sounds like a civil matter.

It's probably not documented...

Re: Best way to store paper charts.

This guy said he wanted to use the charts for art. Folding them will create creases, destroying the art concept. I'd fold them for use on a boat as space is limited, but for art you do not want...

Re: Best way to store paper charts.

Roll the charts loosely and store them in a 4" PVC tube of sufficient length with end caps . Get some flower drying salts at a garden center and put that in a cloth bag and put it into the tube....

Re: Buying a boat with deck delam

Drilled and filled doesn't usually fix a large area of delamination. It needs to dry out completely before it will work and that will only happen with a couple of New England winters under cover or...

Re: canvas stitching

Unless you're willing to do a lot of your own work, a sewing machine that will do it will cost too much. I killed 3 home version Singers (don't touch the wife's machine) and I bought one POS on eBay...

Re: Sailboat for constant 15-20 knots of wind

Island Packet, full keel, heavy, built for the sea not racing. Modern design inside. Keep it away from the shallows though.

Enjoy!

Re: Bad boat buying experience

No money, no paper, no contract. You might have let on that you were going to negotiate the things the surveyor found and some one else offered full price no questions asked. Even with honest people...

Re: We just cannot get it apart

The scraper is also useful for separating things that have been glued on with 5200 such as cleats, lifeline bases, hand holds, etc. It not only cuts but the friction causes heat which softens the...

Re: We just cannot get it apart

How about one of those high-speed vibrating tools. They come with a number of blades one of which is a thin scraper. I use the scraper to remove a lot of things on boats that nothing else will break...

Re: A little Pollution Anyone?

The real problem is the town will discharge excess water when they have a break down or heavy rains. Then some land owner will notice it on his beach or there will be an article in the paper about...

Re: Argh! - Charter Hull Scratches

From the photo that looks like a pretty good gouge and there could be a vertical crack there as well. I doubt you would not have noticed if you ran the boat into something hard enough to do this....

Re: What to do with an I-Pad?

Your iPad maybe old enough that you can't run the latest version of the OS. If so many of the programs won't run. We had one of about the same vintage and that was the case. Also Apple wouldn't give...

Re: Flying Scot - did I buy the wrong boat?

The Scot is actually designed to be difficult to dump over. As the wind blows it over, the wide cockpit will start to block the wind and it will come up. You can flip one of these but you have to...

Re: slip vs. mooring

I think you're missing one main point. If you sail alone, bringing a boat into a slip can be a little hairy. With the wind and tide the boat can have a mind of it's own and there are expensive boats...
