Handheld VHF radios

I''ve owned a Standard HX350 for over three years now, and have not had any problems. I purchased the unit partially because it was rated #1 by PS at the time and also because it included various...

Pocket Racer

I don''t know where you are located, but this may affect your decision. On the west coast, I would also look at the Santana 20 or Wavelength 24, both built by W.D. Schock Company. Both of these are...

Spin pole downhaul block placement

This is a common arrangement on smaller boats such as the J-22''s that I also sail on. Workable and you do not have to adjust the downhaul or topping lift when moving the pole lateral position. BUT,...

Racing Crew needed - Seattle/Lake Washington area

Such an offer would be very hard to refuse, and I would love to sail with you. I have a 30'' ULDB located up the street at the marina at Anthony''s Home Port. I also crew on Spirit of Emu, the 43...

Jaws up or jaws down?

OOOPS! Substitute "up" for "down" in all cases last post by me. A "U" looking from the side, not an upside down U as it came out.

racing bottom

According to my latest catalogs, Baltoplate is still available only in gray. On my boat, it appears that the builder first applied Baltoplate, then covered it with a soft paint to go to the broker a...

Spectra Lifelines?

Another benefit of Spectra lifelines is the weight. More important to racers probably, and standard equipment on some boats like the Melges 24. I will switching my coated wire to them eventually, as...

Jaws up or jaws down?

Kevin, I think you explained it very, very well. However, with a pole outfitted the same way on each end and with matching bridles for end-to-end jibes, the tendency for someone new to is to use it...

If a high D/L ratio is the criteria for the perfect boat, suggest you look at the Westsail 32. Of course, you will be motoring most of the time, and slowly, too. But then it is really, really heavy.

Double Spinn Sheets

I can''t resist this one. I have set up my boats and others with the pole jaw opening upwards ever since an incident 13 or 14 years ago. A downhaul block broke and the pole skied into the mast (nasty...

Macgregor 25 or chrysler 26

My vote would be for the Chrysler 26. The Chrysler will be older, but a better sailing vessel. Condition is the key, but I''d avoid a Macgregor regardless of the condition.

MacGregor 26 vs. ?

Water skiing behind a Mac 26...perhaps that should be in the brochures, with the sailing portion removed. I''ve noticed in the Puget Sound area that most of these are listed in the newspaper...

FOULIES

I bought the Henri Lloyd TP2000 foulies last January so I have gotten some use out of them. It rains a lot here in the Seattle area, and it can blow pretty well here in the winter. Used them sailing...

Main Sail Battens

On my 30'' ULDB (1995 vintage), I switched to a full upper batten last summer to fix a "hinging" problem with the long top batten. This helped to get another season out of the sail, but caused...

Bottom Paint

I have a 30'' ULDB designed by Carl Schumacher. This boat has an outboard rudder; very visible while underway. During a club race this summer, the lower pintle on the rudder broke, causing obvious...

MacGregor 26 vs. ?

You owe it to yourself to keep looking. Think of MacGregor 26 vs. Bayliner. Take off the token rig and turn it into a proper powerboat. The Macgregor has enough windage from the hull to sail sideways...

Atomic 4 Question

The starter that I installed from the auto parts store was non-vented, and nearly matched the original one installed in 1973. Perhaps I was too simplistic in my explanation, and I certainly do not...

Atomic 4 Question

My last boat which I had for twelve years had an Atomic 4. Most of the bolt-on parts were standard automotive items. Ditto for the starter. Removed it and carried it into the nearest supermarket-type...

McGregor 36 Catamaran

Saw a few of them back in the late 1980''s or early 1990''s. You could always tell them by the float-like structure at the top of the mast....sort of a sailboat version of training wheels on a kid''s...

drilling/plugging holes in verticals

I''ve just dealt with this. 72 holes on the starboard side to hold two acrylic portlights to the exterior cabin structure. A learning process as I went...no doubt the forward portlight is better...

Buccaneer 29

Greetings from the Seattle area where Buccaneers (built by Bayliner of power boat fame) were built. The "29 feet" tells me that you probably do not actually have a Buccaneer but a US-29. Big...

Full Batten Tensioner

The only thing I know of is a velcro type inner flap (velcro on batten and inside leech end of batten pocket) with a probing tool/hook. This was what was supplied by my local North Sails loft when...

Cat 22/Bayliner US25, Cat 25?

Regarding an earlier post on this thread. The "US25" probably has "US Yachts" on either side of the cabin, or did, and this boat should not be confused with Bayliner''s "Buccaneer" line of boats...

North Star 23''''

I had a 1973 Northstar 500 (S&S designed IOR 1/4 tonner) from 1988 to last year when I bought a 30'' Carl Schumacher designed ULDB. Whew! what a difference; better for the predominately light airs of...
